Chelsea and Leeds

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I know I'm like a broken record, but I still feel these teams results are more important to us than those of the teams above us. Leeds' next three games are against Ipswich, Leicester and Blackburn, two of those at home. This is a great chance for them to put the wheels back on. Chelsea still have to play two of the top three. Apart from these games, us Leeds and Chelsea have comparable run-ins. Both of them still have to play Man U, and I'm afraid anyone who's hoping Man U lose those matches is looking the wrong way.

This one will go to the wire, make no mistake. Man Utd will lose a couple as the strain with the Champions League will take its toll. The same goes for Arse but I think they have more all round strength in depth. The Scouse lot will be out of the CL soon leaving them to concentrate solely on the league. We just have to get Dyer playing again, Cort up to pace and Bellars back and who knows. Confident we will make CL place at least.

A bit like that ref in their game vs Derby yesterday ...

We might find ourselves more usefully employed keeping our eyes on the hare rather than on the other greyhounds..

Let's console ourselves by recognising that it doesn't matter a flying fig who we keep a watch out for or will to win, lose or draw.

In the immortal words of Doris Day "Que sera, sera...."!

Bellamy lasting just one more game might have been a bit of the good fortune we deserve after the way things have been the last season or two.

But I agree wholeheartedly Clarky, whatever happens between now and the end of the season is still entirely in our own hands, provided the gods dish out the materials in a fair and equitable manner, namely, vastly in our favour. :-{E}

I do not care a damn about the Champions League. I just want to fulfil a wish I have had since Newcastle were promoted to the First Division in the second season. after the war -- namely to be the League Champions of England. I subscribe to Dougal's view that in the run up we should be concentrating on what we have to do, although having said that, we do need some help from the teams who have to face the current top three

Spot on Floridian, we should be throwing caution to the wind with a view to winning the title, not playing it safe to make sure we get into the champions league. Opportunities to win the title are few and far between, and this season we are still in with a very real chance - and still will be even if we lose at Anfield. That said, I really don't think we'll miss out on 4th place - Chelsea and Leeds are a long way behind with not a whole lot of games to go and we've got a lot of winnable games left.

Well, Little Aaron agrees with me:

"There's a 10-point gap between fourth and fifth but we're still conscious of the teams below us as we concentrate on getting back into Europe."

Anyway, I'm not suggesting the team should change their mentality - we should continue going out to win every game we play. I'm just saying that anyone who celebrates Leeds or Chelsea, say, taking points off Man U may come down to earth with a bump if one of those ends up in the CL at our expense. If you feel we're likelier to finish 1st than 4th, of course, you'll disagree.

I don't think anyone's disagreeing with you, Dan, it's just that watching what others are doing rather than concentrating on yourself isn't the best strategy. After this weekend, we have a series of games that are winnable. Difficult but winnable. We have to do what we can with those games. Panicking because Leeds are playing Bolton who are probably easier than Blackburn will do no one any good.

Got to say, just stalked a Leeds chat site and since our game against Arsenal, they have basically started dusting off their passports and looking at prices of flights to Barcelona.

BTW, they really hate us.

I'd rather see Leeds or Chelsea beat Man United or Arsenal than the other way around as that's the result that contributes more to our chances of winning the title. Yes, it reduces our chances of finishing in the CL, but as I said earlier, championships are few and far between (75 years and counting????). CL spots, whilst lucrative, don't put silverware in the trophy room.

Agree with you on that, ADK. But my desire to see anyone but MoanU win the title has nothing at all to do with it. ;-))
