take the rotatot splint and attach it to the crankshaft. after that get yourself a 5.5 horse power hp 170cc engine and attach tha to the axle to give yourself tons of power. when you are finished if u want to soup it up by a dual gauge 9 litre xo5 cylinder turbo drive and also get a hyped up 250 watt speaker with super autodrive on your cart. I have aut drive on my one seat cart and it works amazingly. If you have enough money buy a 250cc 15 hp engine with auto drive xp. I heard it was amazing also try to make the model lighter to increase speeds. Work with your cart and buy many extra things just like auto drive I show off with my cart so after this iI hope you can too (these parts will all come to about 12000 dollars mine was 11643 dolars and i have fun with it everyday. You need a side shaft engine like on a tiller or an edger. Any engine will do as long as it is a 2.5 hp to about an 8 hp for beginners. Have fun...

Hi Alex, I am fortunate enough to live near our county landfill. This is where I find all the right stuff to build go carts and minibikes for my kids. Look for an edger or tiller engine; they have the horizontal or"side shaft" you will need to have the proper allignment of the clutch sproket with the wheel sproket. If you can't find an old go cart frame, you can look for the old riding mowers that were chain-driven. Strip it down, including the engine, which will be the kind you already have, which is the wrong drive shaft configuration. You will have the frame with wheels, sproket, chain, steering, and seat. Mount the edger engine above the axle sproket and you are then ready to buy a centrifigal clutch from Northern Hydralics, in their catalog. You will need to know the diameter of the drive shaft on your engine when ordering. This idea is the next best thing to finding an old cart frame. If you decide to try this, keep in mind that the riding mower frame will sit higher than a cart. It will be more like a car or dune buggy and could tip easier than a cart on sharp turns. Let me know how you do. I really enjoy this, and my kids have lots of fun stuff to ride.

G day Another way which i forgot to mention before to adapt a mower engine is a pulley system. There is alot of obvious disadvantages of this such as slipage which results in alot of decreased power. V pulleys is what you want and you will need alot of belts because they will not last very long. As i said just before about the engine on its side, it is not a very pratical idea alot of machining and expense equipment was used to modify the cylinder and other aspects of the engine to get it working on the side. After about 60 hrs of heavy work on the motor it was working on its side but with alot of floors. Fuel Efficency was down and i lost alot of top end power and there were alot of packing up in the middle of the day to go home and fix it. And i mean alot. If you are really devoted have alot of spare time and money you could get the motor running on its side despite wat cock sniffer pat mygroin said up there. There are other ways to get the engine to provide power horizontily when it is driving verticly. Other than the v pulleys these options are very expense and time consuming. The only other option i would really consider doing is getting a gear box out of a ride on lawn mower. This is really time consuming and if you dont happen to have a broken down ride on it can become expensive. There are more ways which i belive is a waste of time because for the amount of money and time spent perfecting these contraptions you would be able to buy an old dirt bike engine fit it and have it going and it would be a hell of alot faster and in the long run cheaper and less time consuming. it is impossible to move around gears in the motor because that would not change the spot of the output of the shaft. The simpelest souloution would be to simply use a tiller motor. then all you would need to do is put a large sprocket from a motorcycle etc. going from the horsontal shaft of the motor and put a small sprocket on the driveshaft being used and a chain between the 2.

Well Guys... If you really want to use a lawnmower engine, you will need to use a gearbox and a centrifugal(?) clutch, or use a small transmission from a small dirtbike :) Anyways, I am working on a gocart right now, and the hoser who said you cant use a dirtbike engine (50-100cc)is a moron, it is the best practical application, and is very simple to implement, plus you will also have a transmission to change gears, and small motorcycle parts are pretty easy to come by (try finding new pistons for a 1970 lawnmower).

hey my name is rick im builing a go-cart and im useing a old tecumeshe 3.5 moter it is from an old push lawn mower it has a up and down shaft if you realy want to make it work get a clutch with a a pully drive system on it and weld a pully on to the rear axel make sure it is farly tight with a pully system you can bend the belt so it turns the rear tires it worked for me and it diddnt cost anything cause knowone like those engins you cant do shit with them except for cutting grass untill now

Get a old snoblower or genarator and those would work alot easier. For a chassis just use 1 inch square tubing works like a charm. 5hp to 7hp for maximum perfomournce cleaned up

heres what ya do. Get a bunch of metal tubing and weld a basket and then throw the engine in it and put the driveshaft on the ground. if your lucky u should be ab le to ride around on it until it snaps off and your left on your ass in a pile of metal tubing babahawhahabwbaorHR&AJ(RY&@!

Hi , if you want to build a go kart you need to make up your mind what type you want . Do you want a racing kart , off road kart or just a engine powered go kart!.

Here are some tips :

1) You need to get an engine

2) Get 4 wheels

3) Get steel for the Frame

4) Get other things like seat belts , a seat , steering wheel etc

5) Plan your go kart on paper or on the computer

6) Take your time when making your go kart the more time you take the less change you have off making a mistake.

7) The frame is very important . If you make a good strong frame then you can keep it for a long time and change the engine and wheels if you want to.

8) I would recommend that you do not use wood or pvc . Wood will spilt , crack break etc. Pvc is too weak. You should use square steel tubing or round steel bar and weld it together. Aluminum could be used but you need an aluminium welder cause you can not use a normal welder.

9) Remember safety is very important so you should put seat belts on your go kart and/or a roll cage .

10) Always make sure you test the brakes steering and engine on your kart .

11) Look at pictures off go karts and copy the designs you see .

12) If you have a vertical lawnmower engine ( the drive shaft comes out the bottom) you need to convert it to run the correct way.

all you need are 2 V-pulleys and a belt ! . However this is a simple set - up and the belt can slip can cause a power loss and the heat generated by the pulleys means the belt may not last long . This is only one way to do it there are more ways.

13) If you have a vertical drive 4 -stroke engine DO NOT TURN IT ON ITS SIDE BECAUSE IT WILL SEIZE UP AND RUIN YOUR ENGINE!

You cant do it unless you make a gear system. BUT THE ENGINE CANNOT BE MOUNTED SIDEWAYS. My friend and his dad tried it and gas leaked out of it, almost cought on fire, the fuel won't reach the carb, and oil will not lube the piston. DO NOT MOUNT IT SIDEWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must be an idiot if you nearly caught your self on fire. It will take too much time to figuer out how to mount the larn mower enegin right side up. Firsts thing first is to take the gas can off and mount IT right side up. You are such and asshole if you left the gas can on it's side with the enegin. To figure out how to fix the oil problem iit even easer. The oil dosen't even had a oil can it's just a rubber tube so you can mount that the same way like the gas can. Now before you do anything else you have to take the plate the would hold the blade on the lawn mower. DO NOT take the drive shaft or the gear plate. I say this because the plate that holds the blade can be a pain in the ass to get offand you might think to start taking it apart but don't. I used a crowbar and a hammer to get it off. Once you get it off you have to choices to chose for the acelaration, chain or belt. Both are nice but the both have a weakness and one is easer. The belt works on a pully system. it has one pully on the mother it self and the other on the to the back drive shaft. the proble is that if you dont get a good wide blet it will break easy. The cant is with gears like a bike. But it's a pain to mount them and if you dont mount them just right it can come off or break. If it breaks it can tie around the lawn mower drive shaft and mess it up bad. Also the gears might break and could posbley hurt you so go with the belt system it's easer and safer. you cant put a fukin lawn mower engine on a godam go kart. In a lawnmower engine the oil is on the bottom and the same for a gokart engine but when you flip the lawnmower engine around its not causing the engine to break down very quickly when u use it. oil always has to be at the bottom to suck it up.
