Who was Lenore

I am doing a project on Poe and his poem The Raven. I was wondering who Lenore was and how she was incorporated in his life. Thanks. Andrea

Lenore was a symbol of his wife, Virginia. He wrote it after her death.

Edgar attended Burke’s school where he met his first love, Jane Standard. Standard died on April 1824 at age twenty-eight. “To Helen,” “Eleanor,” and “Lenore” were all written about Jane’s beauty, sadness and his love for her.

I am doing a research paper on Poe and how he uses Lenore in his poems and with the research I have collected, many believe that Lenore is a symbol of his wife, Virginia. But then again, it may have been about his first love, but who knows?
