If Softie is correct and we have spent 74 million over the last 9 years would the TV payments not have paid for that plus the extras from catering? What I am trying to establish is how generous the board really is when it comes to funding transfers?

Spence - I haven't forgotten your original request for financial information, and will hopefully get to it over the next few days.

On this specific request, TV revenue was £14.7m in fiscal 2001, up from £13.1m in 2000.

Total turnover in the same periods was £54.9m in 2001, and £45.1m in 2000. As you can see, income from TV accounts for 25-30% of total turnover.

clarky - dare I go 14 mill 13 mill in progression because that would give me a total of 77million over the last 7 years and that bothers me. Perhaps a more realistic set of figures might be 14,13,10,7,6,5,4,4,4 over the last 9 years. By my addition that makes we have earned 67mill from TV. Seem reasonable to you ?

Spence - the only other accurate figures I have are for '99 & '98.

'99 was £9.0m (total turnover £44.7m) and '98 was £10.8m (total turnover £49.2m). These year-on-year reductions reflect non- participation in the CL in '99 visa vi '98.

TV revenues have increased substantially in recent years, so your figures for earlier years may be fairly representative.

Hope this helps.

Spence - I'll send you a breakdown of revenues for '98-01 just as soon as I get a moment.

Clarky - no worries but do not forget my motive!!!Again thanks for your time

Sorry Clarky but your figures to date come to 46 million over 4 years.

Spence - £47.6m actually - not sure of your point? I was simply suggesting that your 'guesstimates' for the years prior to '98 were probably reasonable.

Check your e-mail.

If Softie is correct

Is the Pope Catholic? :-)

The question has no logic. What does it matter what the TV revenue is? The only figure of import is total revenue and profit. The TV money doesn't go into a separate pot. If you want to judge whether the board has "been generous" with transfers (an odd term - it's not their money - it's the club's) you need only look at the figures for profit and debt. We have made losses for at least 2 years and the debt has risen to in excess of £70m I believe. Despite this, the board had the courage to finance YBR with £16m in the close season and the results are there to be seen in the league table. This £16m has now been augmented by a further £5m for Jenas. The board is not "generous" but it is ambitious, (some might even argue profligate) which is plain for all to see.

Spence, what you also have to take into account is that on a matchday you don't just have players wages. There are the stewards, chefs servers people in the kiosk and I imagine the bill from the police is not too small either. Add the utility bills and over the year you must have a canny figure.

My point is that you can't just take the TV revenue in and compare that with transfers. A lot of little payments can make one big one.

Spence - I've twice attempted to e-mail some additional information to you this afternoon, but it is coming back as 'undeliverable'.

If you want this data please e-mail a valid e-mail address to me.

As a whole Premiership clubs spend their match day revenue on buying players. This has balanced out over the 90s and as revenue has grown. So in early 90s Premiership match day revenue was about £140m and the collective transfer fees paid was £150m, by 1999 the match day had increased to £260m and the transfer fee total to £255m. The thing that has changed is that in 1995/96 the wages part of the total player costs was 50%, but has now risen to 70%. So the Premiership as a whole may spend £260m on fees but the total player costs are roughly £700m !!!! This is a cost hidden from the big press releases and not really taken into account by fans looking at how much is spent on players. So a being Sir Les for £6m is not comparable with buying Craig Bellamy for the same amount. As for broadcast moneys, the Premiership total figures are 95/96 43m or 12% of total revenue

96/97 97m 21%

97/98 152m 26%

98/99 196m 29%

99/00 242m 31%

In 99/00 we got £7.3m of the domestic pot for TV money, the numbers above representing all clubs so includes European match money. The figures for 2001/02 to 2003/04 is £500m per year for the clubs across variuos broadcasters. (~25m+ each per year) In 1999/00 the 3 English qualifiers for the CL earned £33m from the television and sponsorship deals, without any of them reaching the semi final stage. So .... stacks of dosh to come if you're in the Premiership, and what looks like £10m+ per season if you can get into the CL. Worth going for and makes you wonder why Sunderland didn't invest a year ago when they were in a qualifying position, and helps to explain Freddie's willingness to 'gamble' on Jenas.

Clarky - as of 10.33am W.A. time I cannot find it.

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2002

Spence - it went off yesterday at 14:52 GMT, and I haven't had any indication of non-deliverability this time.

If it still hasn't arrived let me know and I'll try again. If you have a fax you could e- mail me the number, and I'll fax it - that would actually be easier for sending you copies of an extract from the Annual Report.
