Help - Nationwide Shortfall

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Repossession : One Thread

We had our house repossessed in 1996 and prior to our departure we were assured by a Nationwide Rep. that we would not be pursued for any monies as they would be covered by the MIG. The house was subsequently sold in 1997. Despite having savings accounts with the NAtionwide to date we had not had any communication regarding the repossession and assumed the matter was closed. A couple of weeks ago we received a letter from their solicitiors asking for payment of sum £40, 285.17. Having read some of this site we have sent a Subject Access Rights Notice to them and we have also received a income/expenditure form from them. We had one brief telephone call with the solicitor when the initial letter was received and explained what the Nationwide had said at the time. They dismissed this but said they would settle for a one off payment of £3000. We are not in a position to pay either £40,000 or even £3,000. Can someone advise what to do next please.

Many thanks.
