Ameobi's Problem

-- Anonymous, February 27, 2002

Interim assessment by the local medics only. The scan has been sent to the esteemed 'Mr Dandy' - reputedly the best knee Doc in the UK. for a 2nd opinion.

Frankly, given the problems we epxerienced with KD's shin problem I'd be happier if the scan had been sent to reputedly the best knee Doctor in the world, Mr Steadman.

Too true Clarky.

With the wonders of modern communications, he could have the scan in minutes, and we could have the opinion back in probably hours.

But it'd be just like them to end up finding out the hard way.

I doubt if there's a great deal of difference in ability between Dandy and Steadman. (cf Would you rather have Rivaldo, Figo or Zidane in a Newcastle shirt?) And then there's the question of their availability and how quickly an answer could be sought. It's reassuring that they are seeking such a highly qualified 2nd opinion.

Well I recall Guivarc'h, Hamman and Dabizas to name but three who felt the need to consult other than the "best UK knee Doctor". In addition, I believe Mr. Dandy treat both Alan Shearer and Carl Cort prior to us ultimately feeling the need to send them to the real expert to finally sort things out.

I can't be totally sure, but I have a feeling Mr. Dandy was also involved in what appeared to be a bit of a fiasco with KD's shin problem.

With high-value assets like this, why not just use the very best, instead of something less than that until it goes wrong? Beats me.

Although Dr Dandy identified the cruciate problem that Blackburn told Big Al was just a sore knee..

I think we need to get a grip: there are ultimate specialists in every area. Ronaldo is seeing a specialist in Paris, not a doctor local to Inter; Redknapp and Bridges are still seeing Steadman; blah blah; Alpay wants to go to a Turkish doctor rather than use Villa's medical team..

PS. Clarky, I agree about using the best from the off.

Dougal - there is no doubt in my mind that Mr Dandy is a fine orthopaedic surgeon - he just isn't the best. He failed to solve the knee problems experienced by both AS and CC, and then we sent them to the guy who appears to be the top man, ie Mr. Steadman.

Having established that, why on earth would you then accept less than the very best to assess Craig Bellamy's problem - especially when considering that CB has already had a cruciate ligament reconstruction, presumably the principal reason for the panic? As Pit Bill indicated , the MRI scan could be e-mailed to Steadman in seconds.

Christ, what would Stuart Pearce make of this thread? ;-)

Identification and treatment are completeley seperate issues. Dandy appears to have failed in the treatment department.

I can identify your broken leg but I'm sure you won't want me to treat it! IF Dandy says there's a problem then I'd hope that NUFC will send Bellamy to Steadman for treatment

Can anybody explain why Bellamy stayed on the whole game against the makems ?

Seems to me that if he could hardly walk even as early as Monday, it doesn't seem possible it was something he didn't notice while he was playing.

Unless of course it happened just as the ref blew the final whistle. It wouldn't be like Bellamy to keep his gob shut.

Smacks a bit of irresponsibility on somebody's part, to me.

Don't see why it can't be a delayed reaction, Pit Bill. I've been out of an evening before, feeling completely fine, only to wake up the next morning with a twisted ankle I can hardly walk on or something similar. Of course, alcohol is a great anaesthetic ;-)

similarly I've been out for a few drinks at night been fine when I've gone to bed and woke up the next afternoon with a really sore head ?

Pit Bill, many people are able to carry injuries and don't notice them until they stop, This phenomenon is found in animals as well as humans. Henbit, for example, won the Derby despite breaking his leg half way round. Bert Troutman played with a broken neck. Its explained by what's known as the Gate Control Theory of pain.

Henbit was on the run in and I think it was a crack rather than a broken leg, pretty difficult to hold up a ton of horse at 60 mph on a snapped match

Thanks for that lads. My natural cynicism prompted the query. You live and learn though.
