I shot this last night. It's Brian Schwartz, a world champion kickboxer, in training for a fight on March 9. He's my son's tae kwan do teacher, and he got me in to the training gym to shoot. I'm hoping to get a pass to shoot at the fight...

Excellent! The deep tones, grain, composition. Very nice work.

Tony forgot to mention the lighting!

I've only taken photos at a couple of boxing matches, but it was great fun. I'd love to do some more of it. Call me a barbarian, but I love to see a couple of guys trying to skillfully beat the crap out of each other--it's a fundamentally interesting activity.

I was at the gym again tonight and shot some more. Took faster film (the one above was Tri-X at 800) and a longer lens. We'll see...

Thanks for the comments.

So where are the new shots?

And I know this one was a quick and dirty print, but how about some levels adjustment and little diffuse glow filter?

That's an interesting look. I'll have to spend some time looking on it.

Here's one:

I mean at it.

He won the fight, but because of a scheduling problem, I didn't get a press pass, so I'm not going to put a presentation together yet. He's fighting in May in Vegas and I should get a pass for that, so I will probably put together something then. Plus I will get some more time in the gym with him.

I like the 'in the gym' pics. Bit different to the regular biffo served up in the kickboxing magazines of the world. I have an internet buddy whom shoots kickboxing and got me ringside for a night's action. Was intestesting leaning under the ropes with my manual focus gear, dodgeing blood, sweat and tears! :) As most 1st timers would be trying to do, I was mostly aiming to catch the biffo but in hindsight, some of the quieter moments (reflective and anticipation) made better pics. I got one pic of the fighter in his corner with his 2nds working on him that I'm quite happy with. Must organise to go back sometime!
