I don't really know. He began writing poems and obviously had ambitions to become a great one. However lack of success and perhaps being sensitive to criticism and unable to write in the length considered "great" by the standards of his day, the young Poe turned to amgazine articles and tales. Several tales appeared in 1832, Metzengerstein being the first?. French burlesques and mystic parables as well until in 1833 his big breakthrough winner in A Ms. Found in a Bottle.
