Well, that's official then - all is confimed - I think it will be a huge success.

I think its a well thought out combo of mechanical and electronic engineering. At some point I will be in the market for one. Way to go Leica!!!

Stefan:

look here for the M7 section

Download the pdf file presenting the M7 and take a look at the Metz flashgun Leica want's us to use - MY GOD - it's bigger than the b*****dy camera!

I really hope Metz makes a new flash that is actually portable together with an M7...

Yes it looks good. I am not spending $2400 for it though yet for sure. Personally I would always prefer to have more lenses than another body as they are much more useful. But it looks to me that they have done the M7 right. It would have been even nicer if they had built in a self-timer. The flash sync is less exciting to me really as the idea of a 54MZ3 on an M is a poor match in size and weight, but there again you do need power to fill in in sunlight.

I bet it will be a big success for the company.

it helps to refresh the site, when you looked at it recently. as by magic, the m7 appears...

So we essentially have gained an M6TTL with electronically timed stepless AE-L and a real "off" switch. And questionable battery life; at least they gave us two back-up mechanical speeds, but perhaps they know something we don't -- Yet. And it's only gonna cost $1000 more to get those extra features...

Hmmmmmm... I also think it will be a huge success. And I think that there will be a lot of good deals on used M6TTL's to be had in the near future, for anybody interested. Me? I'll wait until the price comes down out of the ozone layer and then give one a spin. Who knows, after that I may become a convert myself!

read the website and Erwin's report - it sounds great, I for one am looking forward to playing w/ one of these at a nearby photo store soon. Still, for a Leica novice like me, getting a M6 TTL last week (for an incredible price) is THE best way to learn the art. I'm sure the M7 makes photography "easier", but then again, that is not why one gets Leica in the first place.

Personally, I think this type of incremental improvements from Leica are long overdue.

cheers,

I noticed one thing of concern in the Putts review--the number of parts needed to build an M7 is way more than an M6. My experience with machines in general is: More parts = more complication = less reliability. I wonder how many parts there are in a Nikon F5. Did anyone notice in his review something about multicoating the finder to reduce finder flare?

Andrew, I hope this is what you're getting at. In Leica's own Website under "LEICA M7 and LEICA M6 TTL in comparison, Miscellaneous", I see "Coated viewfinder windows"

-- Michael Kastner (kastner@zedat.fu-berlin.de), February 25, 2002.

Coated viewfinder windows

Don't care much for autoexposure, but I do wonder if Leica Service will be able to fit my M6TTL with one of these cool things.

On the Leica web site, the following information is shown in the comparison of M7 to M6TTL:

M7 M6TTL

Shutter speeds: 1/1000 s up to 4 s. (M) 1/1000 s up to 4 s. (M) 1/1000 s up to 32 s. (A)

Anyone know whether Leica can fit the correct shutter speed dial to my M6TTL? It only goes to 1 sec! :O)
