Ipswich 2002

Mentioned briefly on another thread, but Allardyce compared us to Ipswich last season. The suprise side that everyone always reckoned would fall away, but continued to confound. Do you think a lot of neutrals see us like that? Surely we've got a lot more talent in the side than Ipswich did? Perhaps our rise from mediocrity is too rapid to accept as anything but a bit of a lucky run? Or do you only become a good side after you've proved yourself for a season?

.... it could just be that Allardyce is a dozy tosspot who doesn't know what he is talking about.

Ipswich did so well as the 'surprise package' on the crest of a promotion wave, we've done it on 2 years of rebuilding and some great signings. That's the difference.

Must admit I was well annoyed with him (Sam Allardyce) throughout the Sky coverage. Before the game he said that he wanted the Makems to win (Aren't the makems just above Bolton, fighting for their premriership future??). Then at half time he said HE would have given offside even though the pictures proved he was onside. It was only after about 2 mins of the sky presenter explaining the rules and pushing him to accept that Bellamy was on side that Sam finally admitted that the linesman had got it wrong. I dont mind prejudice presenters as long as there is 2 to balance the arguement. Hope Sam is caught in a similar situation for his team, I for one will enjoy watching him scream blue murder as Bolton go down!!!! AM

.... surely he's a former mackem?

Hardly an impartial observer, and as the Manager of a rival relegation candidate who still wanted them to beat us - hardly a rocket-scientist either!

Alardyce still had the memeory of Bolton's game against us in his mind, which was of course all down to a dodgy refereeing decision. Hence his unwillingness to accept that we have had as many bad decisions against than for, including unprecedented recinding of red cards.

Another rediculous comment again yesterday was directed towards Shearer and theb usual jumping for the ball/backing in issue. The commentator said he should have been penalised for not jumping. What ?!? Since when did the rules say you had to jump in the air whilst heading the ball. If Shearer's strong enough to hold his ground, why do people think it's a foul? Perhaps it seems unfair because he's so good at it.

I've always wondered why if Shearer jumps straight up in the air and the opposing player stays flat footed on the ground, why the ref gives a foul aginst Shearer. It's not just Shearer either. There is no real contact, it's not like the were jumping over them or holding them down, but a free kick is still given.

Shearer plays the ref very well

Sam Allardyce was in the same Bolton youth side as Peter Reid so they go back a long way, I thought he was okay

To go back to the Ipswich thing. We all "know" that with a regular 50,000 home support we can produce an enduring top team if only we are managed properly which we are at the moment. Our history is substantial - but some other teams, Bolton being one, also have made contributions to football history in the days when wages were fixed and they would also like to 'get back where they belong'. It's not going to happen for them because they do not have the support to back it up - where was Bolton when Jenas/Dyer were for sale? This obviously makes people like Allardyce jealous.

I find it very interesting that managerial outbursts of one sort (Allardyce) or another (Glenda) indicate problems with their teams that as managers they seem to want to avoid or at least minimize to the point where they do not want to do anything about them. Long may it continue I guess - as long as we never get such a jerk again!

Allardyce was a bit strange being so biased towards Sunderland when they were so close to Bolton in the league.

Disagree that we are like Ipswich really. In one respect we are, as it wasn't expected of us, but in reality we haven't come up from nowhere and done it - our first PL season with Keegan was our "Ipswich" season, except we had a team that could sustain it a bit longer.

Sunderland did it the year before Ipswich.

Only similarity between us an Ipswich is the nice football, and fairly young side.

I've a good friend who's a Bolton fan. Sam was a hero as a player and is becoming similar as a manager. The guy is honest and admitted before the start that he wanted Sunderland to win. Hence his judgement is clouded slightly one way - I'm sure mine was a bit the other way.

The issue was only one pundit - sky normally have 2 - one for each side. Why not yesterday ?
