Gary Speed sends his regards.....

Well, not exactly, but I did have a brief conversation with GS at SJP this morning after I dropped off my FAC ticket application. GS and few players, including Harper, Given, Hughes and Robert were leaving ca. 11am. I can only assume they had been in for some massage or treatment.

The "chat" with GS was brief, and in all honesty the enthusiasm for it was rather one-sided (!). Nevertheless, I did ascertain that the players fully realised what yesterday's victory meant to the Toon fans, how pleased they were to win it for them, and that on the field it was just a battle from start to finish that didn't allow us to play much football.

BTW, he was limping slightly, but reckoned it was nothing to worry about - I fancy it may still be his toe injury that is troubling him.

If Gary was keen to talk to you Clarky, the least you could have done is show a bit of enthusiasm ;-)

Peter - actually, I was nervous about being spotted socialising with a gay icon. ;o{]

Oh, I see. How limp was his limping? ;-)

It's funny how seeing the players live as it were reduces alot of us to teenagers. A friend of mine spotted Andy Griffin at some sports do a year or so ago and talked at him for around 20 minutes, with phrases such as 'you do understand the passion involved in playing for the Toon don't you?' etc etc.

My mate had had alot to drink mind.

I had a chat with the great Peter Beardsley a few years ago. He was injured with a fractured cheek bone and had missed the Ipswich game (where we drew 1-1 I think) the night before.

'The sooner your back the better' I said.
'Cheers mate', he said as he continued his training run without breaking stride.

That does constitute a chat doesn't it?

I bougth a Warner Bros Bugs Bunny cell in a toon strip. Cost a lot of money but got invited to a signing session with Beardsley. Got to the front and got him to sign the back of my pic. There were also postcards and the wife give me a dare and so I asked him to sign this card to the mackem. When he looked at me puzzled I said it's not for me it's for her she apologised, to which he replied ' don't be sorry for me I feel sorry for you.' Absolute gem.

Continuing the Beardslet thread, I was in Disney World (Land?, I get them mixed up) in Florida three years ago with the family, including London born/bred son, who was 11 then, and a Toon fanatic. We're having lunch in Cinderella's Castle, the way you do, and who should the lad spot but Peter B. He stood 5 yards away from Peter, autograph book in hand, and froze. He was okay getting Goofy and Mickey's autographs, but here was his idol. The first goal he ever saw the Toon score live was PB at WHL. After 2 or 3 minutes Peter spotted him, and saw his dilemma. He strolled over, took the book off him, and said 'who shall I sign it to?' Young Patrick was made up for the rest of the hols. A real gem, that bloke, apart from being the best player I ever saw in B&W. Even the missus was impressed, and she hates footy.

Pedro is simply the man :-) Kegs, that must have been after Fash-the-Bash lumped him. I hear it's one of the very few grudges Pedro holds as it was total thuggery and Fashanu never apologised.

....I thought Neil Ruddock smashed his cheek-bone at Liverpool. Did he have a broken cheek-bone twice?

-- Anonymous, February 26, 2002

It was after the Ruddock 'friendly' that I was thinking of

Yer right, it was 'Razor'. I just don't like Fashanu ;-)

I once met Darren Anderton and actually didn't remember who he was (I actually half-thought he was one of our post-boys from work as he looked sort of familiar). What a p***k.

I bumped into Pedro in Newcastle a few years ago. He was happy to sign my ticket for his testimonial which had been a few months before. All the time people were walking past and saying hello and he was saying hello back to them. Lovely guy.
