This lumpy beast looks like a 1940 Kodak 35, one of the ugliest cameras ever made. Also, Minolta has had a FIVE megathinge camera on the market for many months. What is the matter with these people?

this "Leica" digicam is too similar to Canon G2...

Bill Mitchell: Your comments are negative and unilluminating. I've used other Leica digitals, and they're impressive given the price point and technology. I suggest you familiarize yourself with the object of you scorn before you post.

Actually - Bill Mitchell isn't that far off in his design comments re the similarity to the 1941 Kodak Ektra.

But Bill...retro is IN! Get a 1940's-looking camera to carry in your 1940's-looking PT Cruiser or 'new' VW Beetle.

I have yet to hear anyone here comment on the phrase "Vario-Summicron". Doesn't that just trip off the tongue? When will the M get a Vario- Summicron instaed of Vario-Elmars?

Personally, if they sell a wide-angle adapter that takes the "33mm- equivalent" lens out to a "24/21-equivalent" - then I could start to get interested!

Wonder if it's available in all-black or all-chrome - or just this 'panda' version.

Not one to be a big fan of digital cameras, but I have to say the Digilux looks right in it's "retro" design. Some of these compact digitals are getting too small. Ever tried to shoot with a Nikon 885? I need a kid's hand to shoot with it. I think it's the first digital to have a built-in hood. Someone was thinking!

actually i think the pentax optios or the canon ixus are the best in terms of design for digicams, because they're small, but yet they feel solid, y'know? (personal observation)

Looks interesting, I notice there's not much fringing. Pity they don't provide a raw file, you can't really evaluate the quality form these jpgs. I'm sure it cost twice as much as any of its competitors.

I don't see any similarity with either the Canon G2 or the Electra.

Many initially "ugly" objects become classy and stylish in due course. Not that I think the Leica Digital is ugly. To me it looks like an updated CL.

i was referring to the specs...especially the lens...others noticed it too...

-- Dexter Legaspi (dalegaspi@hotmail.com), February 25, 2002.

Rob, I think there are some raw files on the Leica website now.

The look of the digilux is fine... You have a Leica Lens ~ Vario-Summicron, 4 megapixels ~ which is excellent for its Point and Shoot design and keep in mind, also how long before Leica introduces the adapter to utilize the R Lenses or even M lenses, who would be able to compare their product to the digilux I.... NO ONE !Don't forget this is a point and shoot fixed lens format..Let's give them credit...

I think you're right, it DOES look more like the Ektra, which is only the SECOND ugliest camera ever made.

-- Bill MItchell (bmitch@home.com), February 25, 2002.

it look like to me is Panasonic Lumiux LC5 mode.

-- jose (jose_phla@hotmail.com), February 27, 2002.

i think it looks cool. it's the specs that worries me, though...me thinks it's not really a leica lens...i might be wrong...i hope i'm wrong.
