"Former Town star Kieron Dyer is in legal strife after being charged with a driving offence. The England midfielder whas been charged with allowing another man drive his car without insurance.

"The Newcastle man and friend James Leech were allegedly stopped by police on August 4th last year in Rougham Road, Bury St Edmunds.

"Dyer, rated at £22 million in court, had been summoned to appear along with Leech before magistrates in Bury yesterday. However initial proceedings took place without him, his solicitor having sent a letter to the court.

"The case has been adjourned until March 15th and will be heard at Sudbury Magistrates court.

"Ipswich-based Leech is charged with driving without insurance and not producing a valid certificate of insurance to police."

I saw this yesterday on TOTT. Really it's a non-story. Happened in August FFS! It's very minor traffic offence, god even I've committed a road traffic offence! He'll get a standard fine (£50 or something) and points on his licence. Can't even believe this is news!

Can you be charged with alowing someone to drive your car without insurance? What happens when you get your car nicked? Surely the driver himself is the only person able to drive without insurance. Have I allowed a mate of mine to crash his car just by being in the car and not shouting stop quick enough?

I agree Dave, it seems a stupid law.

Surely a grown adult is responsible. Just like the laws on seat belts, where the driver is only responsible for them not being used if the passengers aren't adults.

What happens if his mate lies? It's pathetic to assume that people would have to carry round insurance details just to prove they were allowed to drive.
