Many of you know I have a tour company - Earth Mysteries & Sacred Site Tours. Some of the tours I do are Crop Circle Tours. http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/eng.htm http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/cropcir.htm
I was contacted by THE TRAVEL CHANNEL and am working with them filming a special to be done on Crop Circles. I have set up the whole thing here!
No crop circles yet this year so they will use footage from the past, but will interview me and film in the Avebury area (standing stones, Silbury Hill, etc) at the Barge Inn (crop circle watchers pub) as well as film interview with one of the farmers I know who has many formations appear in his crops.
I'll let you know when it is coming out!

What I have been wondering about the farmers (since you know one), is there any opportunity for compensation (including tourists) for the crops that are destroyed as a result? At least it looks like a loss.

Registered: Jun 2001 Location: next door to Alice in Wonderland Posts: 1463 Thanks all. Brooks - there is no compensation as far as I know. But what many of the farmers do that have it happen a lto in their fields is set up a booth and collect a pound coin admission to help cover their costs and also monitor the field so that no one goes in smoking and destroys the rest.
Some set up a little honor system contribution box - works well over here.
The farmer I'm meeting with tomorrow - Tim Carson - has these in 2 of his fields all the time.
Here are some photos from the last 12 years. It started for him and big time in 1990. This was one of the FIRST ones I ever went in
Alton Barnes, Nr Devizes, Wiltshire. Reported 12th July 1990 Updated Sunday 16th November 1997
This formation within the heart of Wiltshire was to bring the world's attention towards the phenomenon.
Alton Barnes back in 1990 was your normal Rural sleepy picture postcard village in Wiltshire, it was situated at that time slightly away from the Crop Circles haunt, some two miles south of Avebury, on the borders of the Vale of Pewsey. Not a lot went on, but on the 13th of July 1990 all of that was to change, as this 400+ft long pictogram was to put Alton Barnes on the map, and to probably make it the most famous village in the world!
If you weren't able to visit this pictogram set within a natural amphitheatre, surrounded by Ancient Sites as Adam's Grave and Knapp Hill, then I would like to try and describe the events that surrounded this amazing formation at that time. The appearance of the pictogram took everyone by surprise, no one could have predicted a shape of this complexity and originality, the formations that had appeared in the immediate area at that time, were still resembling the designs of the late eighties, but here was something different from the norm, and was to capture the world's imagination.
Tim and Polly Carson are the Farmers of East Field and the surrounding land, but this was there first Crop Circle they had experienced on their Farm, and naturally they were excited about the event. Polly drove up the sloping road towards Napp Hill on the early hours of July 13th to view the formation, and was overcome by the shear scale of the design. She felt that a phone call was in order to try and find some experts to view the formation for themselves and called the local paper. By chance the lady on the phone knew of Colin Andrews and gave her his number. Well as you can imagine it literally spiralled from that point, and many of the leading researchers were astounded by its appearance, and its overall construction. Many of the major formations throughout the years, have at times had unusual events that have surrounded their appearance. Alton Barnes was no exception, as many of the local residence's reported strange behaviours from their pets, and experienced an unearthly sound which seemed to have flowed at very low altitude over the village itself on the very night the formation was formed. They couldn't really describe it exactly, but it was as if a loud jet aircraft had flown directly over them, but this actually occurred in the early hours of the morning. Were the Military carrying out night movements over civilian populated areas, it would seem unlikely but Alton Barnes does lay within Military testing country. We'll never really know what happened that night, but it will always be part of the mystery of the phenomenon.
The Crop Circle Connector has included this additional report and further photographic record of this formation, as it will always remain a fond and magical memory to us, back in those heady days of 1990. In some way we are celebrating this formation, as it is quite hard to capture this particular event in July 1990. Many thousands of people came to visit the formation from all over the country and world, and from all walks of life.
Crop Circles are generally places where you can probably only connect with complete strangers with regard to their thoughts and experiences on life, and the meaning of it. This was the first formation to actually connect with other people, and that is one of the magical sides to this phenomenon, because it brings people together, who outside in the modern world wouldn't give each other the time of day. Its quite extraordinary, and Alton Barnes was almost the pioneer formation for this unorthodox gathering of people. Certainly the roadside to East Field was an indication of the power of this formation, it resembled at times a Car Park, as people scrambled for a place to view the formation, and even used their car roof's to get a better elevation for their photographic albums.
On to the actual floor construction of East Field, it has taken a time to each point, but I wanted to describe the events and experiences surrounding this formation.
The overall length of the formation was the largest in the world at that time, some 430 feet in length. It comprised of six main circles in a line, with two independent dumbell designs, with one single outer ring circle creating the head of the formation. The crop itself was as flat as a pancake, I can't stress how flat it was (See Photographs) every part of the formation had the same applied pressure on the plants, even the main key feature on the head circle was the same, with the crop flowing perfectly into each fork segment. The main circles on the formation where flowing in a Clockwise rotation, and the boxes on either side of the connecting avenue carried on the same design from the Cheesefoot Head formation from earlier in the season.
The key features further down on the second Dumbell displayed a forking feature into the standing crop walls, with gap seeking trails leading off into the unaffected plants. This was mirrored on the fork feature on the other side of the formation.
The 1990 East Field formation I hope has been placed within the Crop Circle Connected with great fondness, and will always be remembered by the most active 'Croppies' who where fortunate enough to experience the 1990 season, and the events surrounding this extraordinary time in our lives.
Other's from Tim's fields in 1991
From 2000 I think........notice how 3 dimensional it is

Are there any noticeable differences between hoaxes and non-hoaxes
so they're either blokes stomping about with planks, or UFOs squishing the corn

Registered: Jun 2001 Location: next door to Alice in Wonderland Posts: 1463 a very very few may be hoaxes but we are talking 2000+ in the UK in the last 12 years or so and hundreds in other parts of the world. People who grew up in 20's 30's 40's 50's 60's also report seeing them and playing in them and no one thought anything of them.
They seem to be largely in the area of the UK that has Stonehenge, Avebury, etc. They seem to be in lands that are chalk landscape underneath the crops and large aquifers of water as well as energy ley lines.
Rarely has anyone been caught hoaxing them and as you know, in the UK there is very little darkness in the summer to do them under. Many are by main busy roads. Nowadays people sleep out near the fields that they often occur in and have never caught a hoaxer making them. Some are in totally obscure places and would never be seen except spotted by a plane.
Its hard to visually tell if hoaxed, but on examination the crop looks as if it has been treated to microwaves - bursting of cell walls, etc. Many other things too.

Richard, there are some hoaxes and I've seen on programs how people imitate the crop circles.
In the hoaxes, the part of the reed where it is bent is completely crushed. At the crop circles for which there is no explanation, the part of the reed where it is bent remains hollow like a straw you could sip from. Also there is a difference in the flow pattern.

Registered: May 2001 Location: UK Posts: 1525 Thanks I usually buy Lucy Pringle's calendar, I must admit I've been a but sceptical about crop circles but they appear all over the world and I can't imagine Russians and others being bothered to hoax them yes in the UK how do hoaxers find the time during the short nghts and why aren't they discovered I know they're doing this under darkness but I've been walking about in places where I thought there would not be another soul, then you can always count on some idiot popping out of nowhere, I'm not sure about the experiences of other board members but I always get asked directions practically everytime I'm out somewhere whether accompanied or not, cars and trucks have even been known to stop by the roadside to ask me directions while I've been walking along trying to look inconspicuous, a cyclist even asked me the way while I was stopped at a red light, it got so bad that I was afraid to leave the house so I tried to make a dash out of the front door to the garage, but sure enough someone at that moment was standing outside my front door and asked me the way to Rose Cottage or somewhere on one occasion I was asked directions about 3 times in the space of about 10 mins, they get a bit surprised when I reply "how the f*** should I know" only kidding

I've got to see that show!
A while back my twin bro told me of one of the most amazing "crop circles" ever - found down in South or Central America. I have no idea if this is true.
If I remember correctly, the design was actually done on a remote, secluded beach and didn't involve any shifting of sand, etc. as one would expect.
The design was caused by "resist". That is, that when the beach water would roll up on to the shore areas of the sand would simply resist the water causing the perfect circles to be seen (kinda of like when water washes over wax).

We have been crosswise on some things but nothing good can come of this.
These people have seen your websites, have formed an opinion, and are looking for a counterpoise to a scientific viewpoint.
They will make you out as a wack, because that will sell better than a sincere questioning person.
Ask any person who have been on those US daytime talkshows. They are always "likeminded" and non-judgemental. They are paid to be that way, that is a producer's job.
Back in the survival heydays they would do things like that to people to prepare. They would come in all smooth, butter them up, shoot film of all of the preps and then ask questions like "I am sure you have some way to defend yourself and kep people from taking all of this." People who fell for this would explain how weapons were tools, and then show a few.
About all that made it into the program, are article, would be the person holding the weapon.
In that business you get no creative control and once you sign the release forms they own it. All of the straight stuff will be on the cutting room floor.
It may get buzz for your business but nothing good can come from this.

The TRAVEL CHANNEL doesn't do programs like you are thinking. Its not Jeraldo.
Filmed today - all went great! LONG, but great. Horrendous wind. Camera kept breaking - they do that all the time in crop circles and at Avebury and Stonehenge. Equipment malfunctions. And it happened again. Even, Tim the farmer, brought it up. He had 8 crop circles in his fields last year - he has one of the largest farms in the UK, I think. He has 80 or 90 in the last 11 years!

Registered: Jun 2001 Location: next door to Alice in Wonderland Posts: 1463 filmed yesterday for the Travel Channel! Exhausting. NO rain thank goodness but gale force winds. Doubt they use shots of us outdoors in the fields - my hair was blowing every direction ( I have long hair) Couldn't do interviews outside due to wind.
Interview with Tim Carson the farmer (kind of a yuppy farmer - one of the largest farms in the UK) - 200 dairy cattle on the other side of the wall from his office and interview - loud! And he had put the bull in with them yesterday! Imagine. Flies buzzing.
My interview in the pub - with pub-ites! Windows of old pub rattling in the wind!
Camera kept breaking on both Tim and I. - cameras and equipment malfunction in crop circles, and in standing stone circles, by the way! Yes, tis true and proved itself. Tim told a story of the BBC coming out and none of the clip on microphones would work in the circle - would work as soon as stepped out. Ended up using hand held ones that work. Every year in my groups some of the cameras break in STonehenge, crop circles or other stone circles.
Kept haveing to redo parts of our interviews due to camera breaking. Who knows what they will come up with!
Tim said he's had 80-90 formations in his fields since 1990 (first one I was in). Last year had 8 or 9 (?) - he has huge fields all over the area. With the price of wheat 1/2 of what it was in 1990, it amounts to quite a loss! He said he wouldn't be sad if they stopped. But he knows they are NOT hoaxed.
Did you realize that NO ONE has ever been caught hoaxing any of these grand ones over the years? Rarely has anyone ever bragged doing them. If they do brag they did one, they have NEVER been able to reproduce them.
It was great fun, but exhausting.
It probably won't be out till May or June. I'll let you know. Also got them to film in Avebury among the standing stones too
