Yeah, the EOS rag spilled the beans too:

Gee Haa! Hot dang! Now all I need is a digital ready tripod, a digital ready camera bag and a VISA friendy price of $299 instead of $2999... Oh well, I guess I'll have to suffer with my dodobird Provia chromes and EOS 3 for a few more years.

Strange, they doubled the rez but hung on to the same tiny chip size (1.6X) and 3 futty Rebal G focusing sensors. It looks like a cross between a Rebal G and Elan 7. I guess it's fitting as the model number--D60--indicates a lower model than the D30 (higher numbers indicate lower models). Thinner plastic? Made in Taiwan? Plastic lens mount? Digital counterpart to the EOS 66? Is Canon leaving numerical space for a model between the 1D and D60?

Everything I've read has indicated it has the same build quality as the D30. Which in my opinion is pretty good. It's quite sturdy, has a real battery door, weighs a lot, etc. Both have metal lens mounts.

But yeah. It is funny it has a larger number when it seems a better camera than the D30 in nearly every respect. Presumably they were going for the mnemonic value of D30=3 megapixels and D60=6.

For $3000 I'll have to stick with chromes, too. I like the 1.6x magnification. It was one of the best features of the D30 to me. I could get the performance of a 640mm lens from my 400mm and still only carry 3 pounds. Three focus points are okay--most of the time I only use the center point anyway. But I still await a $1000 digital EOS body.

Don't be too sure that the approximate $3K price tag is going to last long (if that's what it is). There may be some competition from the Nikon camp with it's new D100--which I understand will be going for about $2,100-$2,200 or there abouts. If you aren't heavily invested in Canon lenses, jumping ship for the Nikon won't be unheard of if it's considerably less in price.

Also, I agree with those who think the D60 is a nice unit and seems to have addressed some of the down-side issues that existed with the D30.

Or we could all delay the wait indefinitely, and have a beer.
