Auguste Dupin, French detective who figures in the tales "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" "The Purloined Letter" "The Gold-Bug" and "The Mystery of Marie Roget". He is the archetype of a host of private detectives to come. In a movie about Poe(Joseph Cotton) the writer uses his detective's name.
