Problem with EF 28-135mm lens

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

hi there,

i bought a used EF 28-135mm lens from the local dealer. i find that when i mount the lens a sound is heard as if the apperture blades are stopped down or some kind of contact sound. this happens only when the batteries are loaded, both types of batteries: 2 CR2 lithium or 4 AA size alkaline batteries in the BP 200 pack. what could be the reason. is there any problem with the lens or the body. i have EOS300. please help. the lens still hold canon's warranty in the EU countries and ofcourse the body too.

thanks

Sajeev,

Don't worry - you are hearing the IS mechanism at work. Try turning the IS switch to off and the noise will stop as it is disabled. Turn IS back on and half-press the shutter button and not only will your lens focus but you will hear the IS mechanism constantly adjusting - it continues for a few seconds after you take your finger off the button.

thanks derek. but this happens even when IS of off i.e.on "0". well, let me check it again. i think i will hear the sound again. in that case i have to get it repaired (possibly free of cost) from canon.

Sajeev,

If it happens with IS turned off - then it sounds like a problem - suggets you get it checked.

Do you mean the soft rattling sound that is caused by the electrical contacts when you mount or remove the lens? That shouldn't be a problem.

it sounds only when i mount the lens with batteries in the camera. when i mount the lens without batteries, it doesn't sounds. but next when i inserts the batteries and close the battery cover, the same sound is heard. is it due to the USM and/or IS being initialised due to the batteries or i have to get it checked through the dealers.

thanks

Sajeev,

Seems you have discovered some peculiarity of the 28-135 IS lens. I did some tests with mine and on an EOS ElanII (50E), A2E (5) and 600 (630) I had the same effect - just before the lens is completely turned into the locked position there is a slight mechanical noise very like the aperture stopping down sound. It happens whether IS is turned on or off. It only happens though if the camera mode dial is switched on. If the mode dial is set to Off/Lock then nothing happens. I tried some other lens but its only the 28-135 IS that does it. I have no idea what it is or whether it happens on other IS lens. Anyone know?

Anyway, my lens has never given me any problems so I wouldn't worry about it!!!!!!

Sajeev,

Agree with you and Derek. I didn't realize that noise until I read your message... I don't know why it happens, but my lens still works perfect. Does it happen in all 28-135IS lenses or is it a little defect of some batch? My lens was bought in Germany 2 months ago.

Does anyone know if it happens with other IS lenses?

maybe you should turn off the camera before connecting the lens to the body.

i did so and still it doesn't work.
