Googlewhacking

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

As reported on CNN, 6:00 am e.s.t., there is a new pasttime emerging known as googlewhack. It is accomplished by putting two totally unrelated words together into the google search engine and getting back a single connecting enity. It must be only a single connection of the two words to be offical. The report stated that over 10,000 have been found so far and they are reaily bazaar word combinations. Turn off the soaps, feed the chickens later, the cows will understand as you pursue this new and enlightened enertainment!!??

For the last 30 minutes I have been trying this, the closest I have came up with still has 4 entries and that was eremite kloof. Eremite being a type of hermit and kloof being a ledge or shelf in rocks. Tougher than it looks.

Fenrir dormer, Fenrir a Norse myth, dormer, an upperstory window has 9 entries. This is starting to be frustrating.

this sounds fun (?!) So, I think I'll try it & let you know what I find (if anything!) ;) Mitch, you're keeping our brains working, that's for sure!

Sorry Mitch, I only needed five minutes for this one.

Ulema: a Mohammedan hierarchy of imams and cadis who interpret the Koran and the laws.

Pileum: the top of a bird's head.

I chose these words by randomly opening the dictionary at two spots and looking for words I never heard of. I plugged them in and came up with one and only one entry--an online dictionary.

banderilla: a dart, with a banderole attached, used in bull fights to exasperate the bull

The fun of this is to see what the web site is that puts the two words together. These two were on a thoroughbred auction site as horse names!
