Tele Zoom!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hi

I am planning to get a good tele zoom for my EOS 3. I have 28-105mm USM, 50mm/1.8 and 100mm lenses. Which one would be the better? I do consider 100-300mm USM or 80-200mm. Which one should I go for. I am looking for a USM lens. Could any one also suggest me a good L series zoom lens in this range?

Thanks John Peter

It would seem a shame to use only an 80-200 on your EOS 3. The lens is the most important part, as far as the final image is concerned. With my EOS 3, I use a 70-200 F4L, which is a great combo, as it allows cross-type, high precision focus on the centre point, which the other lenses you mention will not give you. It has USM also, and the optics are a true league above the other lenses you mention. You should be able to find the 70-200 for around $600 if you're in the US, or about £600 in the UK. Elsewhere, I don't know what it would cost you.

I don't think you could wrong with any of the 70-200mm L zooms. Take your pick!! I use the 70-200 f2.8L and it works extremely well (fast, sharp, versatile). The f4 has an excellent reputation and costs about half the price of the f2.8. If you have money to burn, you can check out the IS. The other option is the 100-400 4.5-5.6L USM IS, which I have never used. It costs a little more than the 70- 200 f2.8. It will give you more range but is a much slower lens and will probably not be as sharp. If you need IS, this might be a good route.

Take a look at the new Sigma 100-300 f/4. It's one of the best tele zooms around...

There is also the 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 USM which is only available second hand since it no longer manufactured. I have just acquired one and the focusing is just as fast and pleasant as my 28-105. I have yet to examine its optical quality.
