Leeds United reserve-team winger Harpal Singh has been handed a new three-year deal tieing him to Elland Road until June 2005. The Bradford-born youngster has yet to make his first-team bow for The Whites but the lengthy contract extension demonstrates how highly the club rate the 20-year-old. Singh has been impressive for Leeds' reserve side this season, having been handed an opportunity to shine during a loan spell at Second Division Bury. The new contract hands Singh the opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the Leeds first team, with the player himself describing his new deal as his "big breakthrough". Singh's existing Elland Road deal expired at the end of the season and, should he make the breakthrough in West Yorkshire, he will become the first Asian footballer to play in the top flight of English football.

A bit pedantic, but first Asian? I don't think so. Asia covers Russia, Georgia, Japan, arguably Ukraine and Turkey and I can think of players from all of those countries.
