I know there is a way to check it. I have some that is close to expiration date and I suspect it isn't good, but just wondered how to tell?

I remember something about sprinkleing it on a saucer of vinegar, just grab a new can and see how it reacts then try the old can for the same reaction.

Yep, test it with vinegar, but I put a drop or so of vinegar on the saucer of powder.

sigh..the only way i know mine is no good is when I make baking powder biscuits and the hens turn up their beaks at them and the local kids come to the door asking for them to use as spare hockey pucks....
