Poetry as a passion more than art. However, Poe enjoyed the medium and the theme as much as it sprang from his own feelings and experiences. He could write horror stories without being scared or depressed at the time but it was a stretch to write happy poems like "Eulalie" which has a balance of woe in the beginning too. For Poe it seemed art was a passage from the sufferings and insufficiencies and losses in life to something more eternal, more beautiful and hopeful. But he felt doomed to be stuck short of the goal and far from his treasured past. That is the stand from which his art cries out his strongest feelings. And some of those particular slants seem to correspond to what was happening in his life. His mind was greater than the moods of the moment.
