Sad Stat of the Day - Did You Know......

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Actually, I'll bet someone on here will get this in minutes. Heard it on the radio last night. I'm not actually sure it's true either, but before I give it away I'll let someone show off their knowledge:

When was the last time Newcastle won an FA Cup game in London?

Not a problem this year. We'll beat the Arse at SJP, beat anyone else in the semi's at a non-London venue, and win at Cardiff. I rest my case, m'lud.

Apparently 1956. I can't quite believe this. Blimey - 46 years! Can anyone confirm it?

So, if we go to a replay, we have another London jinx to kick into touch this year. Bring em on I say.

PS It appears that the only London team we have beaten in any cup match since then is QPR (76?) in the league cup.

Yeah but what was the score in that 1956 game, my dad still tells me about listening to the commentary on the radio

It was the year after we won the cup, but dunno who we played or the score. Where's the old gits on here when we need them! ;~)

Bet it was the Arsenal. We didn't win five-nowt by any chance did we?

I know you'll all remember this. December 1999 Drew 1-1 with Spurs. Won Replay at home 6-1! 1956???

1-1 is hardly a win in London! Mind you, for us it probably was as good as a win...

1956. Fulham 5-4 - 4th round. (Casey, Keeble 2, Milburn, Stokoe). Went on to beat Stoke in R5 and in the QF we lost to - oh no! at home to the Lucky Black Cats 0-1 in front of 61474, slightly fewer than saw the Stoke game.

It appears that the only London team we have beaten in any cup match since then is QPR (76?) in the league cup.

How can you have forgotten a SF at OT a short while back? :-)
You must mean in London because there's also Fulham 1961 (5-0), Hendon 1974, QPR (FA AND league cup) 1976, Palace 1988 and 1998(?) as well as Spurs twice recently.
This is one of those records that sounds like a hoodoo until you realise that we have played comparitively few FA cup games in London since 1956.

Well done J. Knew I could count on someone.

So it's true, we haven't won in London since 56. I wonder (says he hoping someone can look it up) how many FA Cup matches we've actually played in London since then? As jonno ses, maybe it ain't as bad as it sounds...

My dad tells the Fulham games as 3-1 up at half time, 4-3 down with 10 minutes left, win 5-4 at the end, sounds pretty mundane to me

Sad Statto here! Since our win against Fulham in 1956 we have only lost FA Cup ties on league grounds in London only TWICE! We lost 2-1 to Millwall in 1957 and 1-0 to Spurs in 1987 [dodgy goal that one]. We have drawn on four occasions and on three of those we won the replay. These were 1976 1-1 at QPR, 1996 1-1 at Chelsea (lost rep on pens) 1997 1-1 at Charlton, 2000 1-1 at Spurs.

We have lost four times at Wembley in that period but who the hell cares about Wembley this year?!!
