Report from the Sheff Wed OS:

The Owls earned a deserved draw after Pablo Bonvin struck in the 26th minute against the side with whom he served a loan spell last season. It was a commendable result against an expensive and experienced Newcastle line-up.

The Argentinean slotted calmly into the bottom corner after hard work from Tony Crane had created an opening. Adam Muller could have netted a winner when Neil Gibson’s fine pass picked him out but Collin turned the shot away.

Newcastle had taken the lead on 13 minutes when Carl Cort drove a low shot into the bottom corner from 22 yards. The home side struck the woodwork on three occasions, Cort’s header coming back off the bar and Wayne Quinn’s rasping volley also suffered the same fate, while Andy Griffin’s drive came back off the post.

Martin Hodge's side defended admirably and their determination was personified when Gibson hacked Brian Kerr's shot off the line in the last minute.

Scorers:
Cort (NUFC), 13 mins - 1-0
Bonvin (SWFC), 26 mins - 1-1

Newcastle (4-4-2): Collin, Griffin, Quinn, Caldwell, Marcelino, Boyd, Lua Lua, Kerr, Cort (McMenamin 85), Ameobi, Bernard. Unused subs: Orr, Chopra, Cowan, McGuffie.

Thanks for that clarkster. Good to see Cort pick up where he left off, I reckon he might be on the subs bench on Sunday so should Griffin

Just about thawed out enough to post! A MUCH better game than last time. Cort's goal was a cracker from about 30 yards out. He had a similar shot in the second half that just flew over. We hit the woodwork several times and were unlucky not to win. Their goal was scored by one of last year's resorves - Pablo Bonvin. Little Kevin was in the stands watching. Hope they decided to give the Quayside a miss this week!

Another game ruined by the KP wind will be my lasting memory of last night.

Collin
Griffin S Caldwell Marcelino Quinn
LuaLua Boyd Kerr Bernard
Ameobi Cort

Collin is a big’un he did okay
The back four didn’t have much to play against but at times flapped about unconvincingly. Marcelino is just shite. Caldwell is a good player with a lot still to learn I would not risk him in the first team; I would play him ahead of Marcelino.
Griffin frustrates me, defensively he is pretty sound but doesn’t apply himself enough for my liking. In the second half he had many opportunities to get forward to provide width but he failed in this. I suspect his fitness isn’t what it should be. Aaron Hughes’ form of late means we’ll see little of Griffin in the first team imo. Quinn is a journeyman pro. He’ll do a job but he is not good enough for a team going for the double.

Boyd and Kerr are improving footballers they work quite well together and are both neat and tide, they both pick the ball up off the back four and keep the game moving along well. They are good athletes and do the essential midfield donkeywork enthusiastically. I was worried about McClen’s promotion into the first team but he knows his limitations and has done well (poor against City mind) I feel both Kerr and Boyd could do the job McClen is doing at the present.
Bernard I like, his fitness is fantastic, his ball control is smashing, he has great vision. Last night I just felt sorry for him he suffered more than most because of the terrible pitch and howling gale. I’m puzzled that he is not playing at full back I would have though he could displace Elliot on current form. He’s a hungry, young man with a great attitude.
LuaLua was the player most likely to do something magic. Two of his contributions impressed me, the first a little ball through a packed penalty box to Griffin who hit the post. The second, he chose to play the ball to the left when it looked certain he was going to play it to the right. In that moment the Wesnesday defence was completely fooled, Ameobi couldn’t control the ball on that pitch in that wind. He runs fast with the ball under control also I understand the way he is being used at the end of games for the first team.
You may well think LuaLua played well last night reading that last paragraph however, don’t be fooled. Yet again 80% percent of his work came to nothing. At times he hasn’t the first idea what he’s doing. His positional play is erratic as is his first touch. The team has to play his way he is unable to play within a system. When he’s good he can be a match winner when he’s bad he’s a liability. KP is no good for LLL's development as a player. Ameobi was poor again he just couldn’t involve himself at all. It wasn’t for the want of trying. Thing just didn’t seem to fall for him. He just wasn’t in the right place at the right time. The partnership with Cort wasn’t great.
Cort scored a blinding goal, he smacked it in from 20odd yards. Apart from that he must take half of the responsibility for a disappointing partnership with Ameobi. Both Cort – who is massive – and Ameobi need good players around them to see the best of them. I’m very confident Cort will be a real handful in the Premiere in the first 11. I’d put Cort above Ameobi in the pecking order because of that goal.

Thanks for the reports.

Having read our reports it's interesting to note that The Journal this morning reports:

"Few players emerged with any creditas gales whipeed across the pitch, but Marcelino, the motm against Sunderland's 2nd string last week, again proved he may yet have a future on Tyneside with another controlled and accomplished performance"!

They also report:

"BR was a notable absentee at a windswept KP as first CC and then former United striker, Pablo Bonvin, produced the obvious highlights of a clash undermined by rapidly deteriorating conditions and a general lack of committment and concentration".

Given the apparent inaccuracy of the former statement, I can only hope the reference to a "general lack of committment and concentration" is also similarly inaccurate. I do have some concerns about the willingness of some of our squad players to put themselves out in these fixtures - and some of them get precious little really competitive action to prepare them to come into the 1st team and perform at their peak when needed.

controlled and accomplished performance

Bollox! he was playing against no one special and was still unconvincing.

A couple of decent tackles and a nice turn at one point that drew applause but nowt special.

Not sure if YBR was there or not. I was sat in the prawn sarnie seats so couldn't really see. John Carver ans Little Kevin were definitely present.

The wind was dreadful, particularly in the second half which led to a lot of wayward balls which the journos tucked away in the press box probably took as poor passing.

Something I noticed from my vantage point above the tunnel was that the players were spending much longer chatting to the bairns and signing stuff than usual. Maybe they have been told to make more effort - good PR etc.

Obvious bung slipped to the Journal in an on-going plan to get people interested in Marcelino. Needs to be seen as the misunderstood talented defender wasting away in reserves and available for a bargain price of ca. GBP 4 Million.

He was good at Sunderland.

Did anyone see Ormondroyd yesterday? Great bit with Keegan entering SJP as someone in the crowd asks if he'd like to buy Marcelino....Please. :-)
