what happens if you take a picture with the tri-elmar on a position between the clicks? will the backlit lcd display of the leica m6 flash smoothly and a nice computervoice tell you of your error?

No, the camera diverts all the battery power into a hidden capacitor, then discharges it into the metal parts of the camera, thereby shocking the HELL out of you. That way, you'll never forget and do THAT again!

Nothing -- other than you get a photo taken with the approximate in- between focal you were set at.

People say it can be made to work but Leica refuses to admit it, probably to avoid a barrage of complaints from disappointed experimenters. Consequently, the 3E manual warns that you are likely to get unfocused shots if you do this.

In answer to your question, if you try this, in defiance of Leica, the flash-ready lightning-bolt will flash with blinding intensity and a sinister computer-voice will threaten you with extermination ;-)

The thing about the Tri-Elmar is it doesn't progress from 28-35-50 like a normal zoomlens. So it's anyone's guess what focal length you'd get between 28-50 and 50-35, but somewhere in the 28-50 region must be another 35...or not? Though it won't focus except in the macro range, one of these days when I have absolutely nothing better to do I'll put my 3E on my Visoflex and have a look.
