Plse let me know which Speedlite is reommended for the EOS 500??

Any series E, EZ or EX Canon Speedlite will work fine with the EOS 500/Rebel X. The EZ lights all have auto zooming heads and most of the EX do too. The EX also has a number of features that your camera will not be able to take advantage of, so you will be paying extra for things you can't use. But the only shoe mount Speedlites that Canon is selling now are the EX series and the one 540EZ. That one is more than your EOS 500 is worth.

You might want to look into a used 300EZ (no tilt or swivel) or 380EX (tilts, but no swivel) or 420/430EZ (loaded with feaatures but still kind of expensive).

You also can use a third party flash from Metz, Sigma, Sunpak, Vivitar, etc. Lots more options to choose from there. Except from Metz, the quality is often less than Canon, but the prices are less as well.
