Lookout stations at Point Lobos/Fort Miley

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Have some basic knowledge about the Sweeny & Baugh 1849 lookout (which was superceded by the electric telegraph) and the Merchant's Exchange with its semaphore addition that is still around.

Does anyone have seen images from the semaphore at Fort Point which linked Point Lobos and Telegraph Hill?

Any history input is very welcome!

Thanx, Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

The semaphore at the Presidio was located atop today's Robb Hill, right near the present group campground. There are old maps of the Presidio at the Park Archive showing this summit labeled "Telegraph Hill."

Yes, I have seen several art images of these telegraph buildings and read stories about them as well. Unfortunately, I can't absolutely say for sure where I saw the drawings but you might try a book called something like the Annals of San Francisco. I'm think I saw it in there. I don't remember much about the story I read about the telegraph stations but I do remember that it was written by Bret Harte.
