Happy Birthday, I'm Cheap

Must stop posting, must stop posting...um, yeah

I'm broke and my brother needs a birthday present. I can't go over 40 dollars. He doesn't like anything normal people like - sports, TV, etc and his computer bites. He works as a writer for the Philly Business Journal and spends his weekends in DC with ze Romanian girlfriend. He boxes occasionally and has a thing for music where people scream and that's about it. Ideas for the unshoppable male?

The Levenger website has some really good sales going on. I like this little case: http://www.levenger.com/shop/ItemPage.asp?Title=Guilford+Stowaway

And I've heard from unnamed sources that Banana Republic is having a monster sale. Merino wool is always a good gift. Merino socks are The Best Socks bar none-that includes cashmere.

Every man I know gets happy over a swiss army knife and/or a big ass mag light, preferrably with the little carrying case thingy that makes you feel like at any second you might whomp someone over the skull with it.

Oooh, you know what else is good, along the lines of the Swiss Army Knife? A Leatherman tool. It's like a Swiss Army Knife hopped up on special drugs. It's got every attachment known to (wo)man, and does everything short of scrubbing the toilet. They come in a bunch of sizes, from keychain attachment to Needs Its Own Zip Code.

Are you looking for a sentimental type deal here? One thing I've done in the past is look through the phone book to see if the birthday boy/girl's name is also a street in your city. Go to it, snap a few pictures of the street sign, have them blown up to 8 by 10s, frame one (or a couple) to give as the gift. You can also write really cheesy poetry about "Melissa Lane" or "Brian Street" that includes info about the birthday person.
