In a drab first half Steve Harper was probably the busier of the two keepers.

But three minutes after the break Mark Boyd puts in a free-kick from the right near the corner flag, Olivier Bernard's shot is deflected off the line but Colin McMenamin is on hand to bundle home from four yards in front of the delirious Toon fans.

Carl Cort bullets in an 84th minute header from a Brian Kerr cross to seal the victory. Bedlam in the Toon end!

Great that Cort scored one. It'll boost his confidence to no ends, although I hope he still plays another coupld of reserve games first. It would be stupid to play him too early.

That was great fun. Many thanks to Screacher for picking me up on the way through. I reckon there would have been more than 9,028 but they baulked at the £2.00 entrance fee which was scandalous compared to the usual nowt.

The new chant of "Shoes off if you love the Toon!" followed by Pythonesque waving of footwear was brilliant, although the aroma left a certain amount to be desired.

Screach's cousin Davey can also be credited with converting the "phillips for England" to "Phillips for Arsenal". Beardsley gave us a wave and the mackems heaped scorn on their own fans for being carted out and also managed some quite unpleasant scraps amongst themselves as we queued to get onto the offramp towards civilization.

Screacher quite correctly picked Bellion as NUFC MotM.....what a turkey! Good sing-song, okay football, great company, brilliant result.
