rear dial on m5

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I don't have a manual for the M5 and would like to know how to use the dial on the back door. I can see it's shutter speeds and f stops but how is it utilized? I really prefer this model to my other Leicas.

It is used to calculate long exposures. If you have a reading of 1/2 sec. at f/1.4 but want to expose with an aperture of f/11, you just line up the 1/2 and the f1.4 and then read out the time required at the f/11 setting (30 sec).
