Arsenal defence

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

The Arsenal game is obviously going to be key, and it seems to be coming at a good time. Keown, Upson and Cole are injured and Adams is just started his comeback. On the weekend they played Campbell and Sepanovs in central defence, and Dixon and Luzhny (on his wrong side) as full backs. Even if Adams does make a comeback before March 2nd, I would be looking at that line up as very vulnerable to our attack. Together with disciplinary suspensions and Champions League distractions, Arsenal are looking the weakest of the top four. Will they be next to drop off the pack or am I underestimating them?

See what you're saying, and we probably will be playing them at their most vulnerable, but anyone with Viera and Henry can turn a game in seconds. I'll be glad when it's over, whatever the result.

Pires looks to be their best player....even with that dodgy stepanuts in defence they'd be a helluva threat up front...

They'll always be a huge threat, but the chinks are appearing. Their core Franco-Dutch players will have internationla duty, and the Champions League to contend with. It seems to me that the foreign players struggle with motivation for some of the premiership games when interspersed with the big glamour games.

Au contraire Monsieur Miller. I think you'll find he's Japanese and hasn't appeared yet. He was on the bench yesterday.

But I see what folks are saying. We must hit @rse where they are most vulnerable. Their defence is slow and should not be able to cope with our speed of attacks. Of course, we can't afford to let them dominate midfield as we did at Highbury. A big game for Gary Speed, who if memory serves me right, is on 4 yellows right now - unless he's had one dropped for going 5 games without one. I'd hate to see him pick up another between now and then.

did anyone see Henry's booking yesterday, what a tackle, obviously been asking Cantona how to do that. For those of you not privileged to see it, he chased the full back out to a lost cause ball , he launched himself two footed, at least a foot off the ground, nearly horizontal in the air as he stretched, but landed a yard away from both ball and player. Made no conenction but got booked for intent.Laughed at ref when he was booked.

That certainly deserved a booking, tho I do think Winter was perahps a tad biassed in giving 3 (or was it 4??) yellows to @rse. One or two didn't deserve it compared with what he let go by Everton. Still, who cares - not me!

Stepanovs should have been sent off he dragged Weir (i think it was him) over in the box and made numerous rash challenges. I thought Everton were very unlucky.

Everton should have had 2 penalties.

So how can Winger say they do not have the luck

Re Speed's yellow cards. If he's got four he can't be banned for the Arse match because a booking on Sunday would be too late - less than 14 days before. In fact, if he avoids a booking on Sunday he'll be safe for Liverpool as well. That goes for anyone else in the same position - no one can miss the Arse game now and only a problem on Sunday could lead to anyone missing Liverpool.

O'Brien, Speed, Acuna are all on 4

Distin, Shearer, Elliott and Solano are on 3, as well as Jenas
