greenspun.com : LUSENET : Art Deco Society of Washington : One Thread

25 years ago I bought a signed and number print by Rene Ligeron. It is a lovely river, woods, and cottage picture. It is signed and and numberd 171 with a stamp. In the upper edge is the year 1923. I am unable to locate any information about this artist. Any help with my quest will be most helpful. Thank you so much Maggie Freydoz Belmont CA

Dear Margaret,

I bought a water color signed R. Ligeron about 10 years ago in Woodsice CA. It is 9x13 . It is a lovely, accomplished scene of trees reflected in a lake. I am also interested in knowing more about the artist. The date you mentioned is a small piece of data for me. Could you pass along anything more you learn?

Thank you

Mary S.

I also have an aquarelle by R. Ligeron, approx. ll" wide x 9" high, of a country lane with 4 trees down each side, a woman with a basket on her arm in the lane, a lake or river to the left and a steepled church in the left background on the far side of the lake. The little information I have researched at the library lists Rene Ligeron as being born in Paris on May 31, 1880. I believe my French translation to mean he entered an exposition in Paris and won a prize on December 17-18, 1925 for a picture entitled "Vieux pont sur la riviere; soleil couchant" (Old bridge over the river; sun setting). The prize was 300 francs. I was also hoping to learn more of this artist via the internet. Please keep me posted if you learn more.

I don't know much about art, but inherited a 13 x 28 labeled R Ligeron in the lower right corner. It features, at right center, a dark-haired young woman in flowing dress holding a large bouquet of flowers. She is framed by two pillars and rich foilage. To the left of her is an angel on a flower-bedecked pillar. The angel is holding a dove. In the background, a lake runs the length of the painting. On the far side of the lake, a manicured lawn rises gently till it meets a low stone? border, and a broad walkway descends to the water's edge. The lawn, stone wall, and other items in the background are mirrored in the lake. I don't see any print # on this. 161/1/2 or /61/1/2 appears on the back.

I have also inherited the same print from my mother that Daniel Feist inherited. The frame, probably from the twenties, has an old label on the back with a raised trademark that says “Frames Mouldings Pictures Chicago” around the outside and a big M with GC under it in the middle of those four words. The print is numbered 1610 on the label and someone has handwritten the title of it below the number: “The Offering”. If you have any further information on this, I would appreciate it.
