The Winter Olympics.......Who Cares???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Christian Church : One Thread

I know I don't....winter or summer. The Olympics have become mired in politics, political correctness, and social experimentation.

No thanks!!! Better things to do.

Yeah -- but it was still fun last night watching the athletes march in, and hearing the great cheer that went up for the Jamaican Bobsled Team ... people still enjoy that one.

My beef was with the final few torch carriers. It was like, "Hey! Look at me! I'm a Big Star and everybody loves me! Isn't it cool that you get to see ME, you lucky people!"

"Oh, and by the way, here's the Olympic torch."

"But I'M here! Thank you for coming to see ME!"

I don't much care for the politics of the Olympics - or even the way they define "amateurs".

But I still watch because the original ideal is cool.........beating the best the world than throw at you in a chosen field has to be some kind of Rush.

Plus I guess downhill skiers going 65mph & lugers going 90mph evokes some morbid curiousity from within that I can't resist!

Still, probably some of the most memorable sports moments in my lifetime have to be the US Hockey Team victory in 1980 and Frank Shorter's Marathon victory in 1972(?).

And don't go cancelling the Olympics yet, I'm still working on getting Kevin qualified for the 10meter shooting team for 2006!

I guess for me....it's kind of like the reason I can't watch the "Ellen" show that CBS keeps trying to shove down our throats.

Yes....she is very funny....BUT....I just can't get over the pervert that she is.

BTW...a historical note....the "Games"....have always, historically, created ethical dilemas for Christians.

True Danny,

but that's typically because many of the ancient games were fought to the death or close to it - death for sport is obviously a non- Christian ideal.

The idea of honest competition, where all give of their best in a Sportsmanlike manner, is surely Biblical. Paul sure made many references to "running the race" and fighting - not to mention Judes' "Contend earnestly for the Faith".

Of course the "sportsmanlike manner" these days is pretty much the exception, not the rule. Like most things in this world, it's a mixed bag. At least in Kev's case....as long as you have a gun in your hand, ain't too many people gonna mess with you.. ;~)

According to the recent issue of US News and World Report, question is "Winter Olympics or Mormon Olympics?" Let's not loose sight of who exactly is benefiting from all this exposure!!!!!!!!
