I know this recipe thing is starting to fizzle out. But just one more set to go after this. I am thinking of watermelon recipes.

We make a drink with frozen watermelon and lemon juice in the food processor, will have to try the blender now. It is good and tangy, nice in the summer.

Wilted Lettuce salad, my way.

In a large bowl, put a whole mess of greens. can be any kind, escarole, curly endive, spinach leaves, romaine, regular lettuce. Then add a couple chopped green onion, the whole thing. Set aside.

In a heavy frying pan, finely chop some bacon, about 4 slices. and fry the bacon, until crisp. then stir in 1 clove of garlic, minced, And then pour into frying pan some wine vinegar about 2 tablespoons and a little water, it will sizzle, but thats alright. Add a teaspoon of brown sugar, stir, and season with salt and pepper to taste, Pour over salad, and toss. Eat right away. This is a old german recipe,My mom always did.

Waldorf Salad,

4 cups cubed apples, 2 cups pineapple tidbits, 1 cup chopped celery, 1/2 cup mayonaise, 1/4 cup whipping cream, 1 tablespoon powdered sugar, 1 drop vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts

In Large bowl, combine apples, pineapple, celery, and mayonnaise, Toss Lightly to coat evenly. In small bowl chilled bowl using chilled beaters, beat whipping cream at high speed on electric mixer just until stiff peaks form Do not overbeat. Blend in sugar and vanilla. Fold into apple mixture, Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Garnish with walnuts. Granny smith apples work well, also winesap.

Mellisa, I have enjoyed this recipe thing. And maybe we could try a seat of the pants type recipe,Since few of us ever crack a cook book, why not do down home cooking, [ Like say fryed chicken] I like to use butter milk to dip in. and just explain how we all do a recipe. Say a post [Just plain down home cooking] once a week. Just a idea. And forget the whats for tomorrow night meal, Bad Idea!!!Just do it your way darling that was better.

Good idea Irene. I think the "what's for supper tomorrow" was OK. But I'm afraid many people don't think that far ahead. Including me. I usually figure it out in the morning, sometimes the night before, but not too often.

Whataburger

1 lb. hamburger, 1 small can sliced mushrooms (discard the liquid), hickory salt, bar-b-que sauce mustard to taste. Shape into burgers, grill, top with American cheese at the last minute. Serve on hamburger buns with sliced onions, if desired.

Walt's favorite Custard pie----(Walt was my Dad) as published in the "Foods of the Flint hills Cookbook", sponsored by the Emporia Gazette.

4 beaten whole eggs/ 1/4 tsp. salt/ 1/2 cup sugar/ 1 tsp. vanilla / 2 & 1/2 cups scalded milk/ 1-9 inch unbaked pie shell/ dash of nutmeg to taste

Miz eggs, salt, sugar & vanilla. then stirr in hot milk slowly. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Put nutmeg on top of filling. Bake at 474 degrees for 5 minutes & then 425 for 35 to 40 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.

Well the bantam eggs are all over the kitchen & I just took 10 dozen to our daughter & family this past week---so think i'll bake a couple of custard pies!! It is snowing huge white snow flakes here about the size of a quarter & has been for awhile----the warm kitchen & the smell of custard pie will be a "good thing" as Martha-baby says!!! later I'm going to go bake pies!!! Well I went to the cupboard---there was a can of pumpkin-----it came over me & I couldn't control it---so there are two pumpkin pies in the oven----I guess it is still a "good thing"----as the kitchen is warm--& the pies smell good-----& pumpkin is MY favorite kind!!! And I still used EGGS!!!! ha!
