Stone Carving / Whittling supplies

Can anyone suggest a good wholesaler of soapstones for beginner carvers? That and good whittling supplies and / or what types of wood is good to start with. ANy info wouold be appriciated!

Here is a site that our local community college uses for soapstone. http://blackpearlsoapstone.com It is a very nice black stone.

Use a search and look for Chip Chats, thats the name of the Magazine put out by the National wood carvers Asso. They have links to all kinds of wood carving sites. The most popular wood for wood carving is bass wood. there are others that are usuable but this is the standard. In europe its called lime wood.
