What made Poe write the Raven? Was it a death?

I am not completely sure, but I've heard that when Dickens published his novel "Barnaby Rudge", Poe disagreed with the way the raven was represented and used and thought that a more ominous and darker image should be painted by a raven and so, proceeded to do so. -Robert
