Custom function loss with Sigma 500 Super

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Perhaps this is mostly directed at Jim S. who has both 550EX and Sigma 500 super, but any help from anywhere is appreciated. Which custom functions on my Elan 2 will not be able to be used with the Sigma flash but will with the Canon? I know that I can use E-TTL function, FP mode but can I use FEL and will the Sigma adjust on the selected focus point (if I have the custom function for this on) like the Canon will? Sigma postings are a little vague on FEL. Thank you.

The custom functions that the Sigma EF-500 Super won't do, are the ones that are built into the 550EX flash body. One of which turns off E-TTL in favor of straight TTL. Another changes the order of Flash Exposure Braketing, stuff like that & none of which is very usefull for most of us. All the custom functions of your camera body will work fine. FEl works fine and it will bias the flash exposure to the selected AF point just like the 550EX.

Other than the custom functions, what the Sigma doesn't have is a high voltage port for a Quantum Turbo or Jackrabbit or a mini/megacycler. It also doesn't have a green okay light, and the head only zooms out to 28mm coverage without pulling down the diffuser. That, and it lacks about 1/4 stop in power.
