Yes Poe's characters were shadows of himself. He based his work on the feelings he had deep down inside but, were too ashamed to let out. They were shawn I think in the last few years of his life.In his poems like Annabel Lee, he is talking about his young wife Virgina Clemm. She also died of Turburculocios in Febuary of 1847.
