The G Caldwell Watch

Hibs -v- Ayr, one of the most dire games I have witnessed in my life, taking into account it was a semi. Playing central in a three man back line, he won his headers, attempted to play football from the back with ten yard passes to his midfield, what I do like about him is his ability to stay on his feet. Last 15 mins he went up front, did not have any clear cut chances to level. The guy he was up against Eddie Annand is an out and out jobber and the position he plays it is hard to judge, 6 outta 10. Previous night I watched the Auld Firm Semi, exciting stuff, although peering thro the hype the neutral would find basic faults. I used it as a measure of our achievement/improvement thro the season and things have changed, In Celtics case I would only want two in Newcastles side, Didier Agathe (£50,000) steal and even though I did not rate his display on the night I would take Larson. Afraid just two from Rangers also, but IMHO these two would be the final pieces, the MoM Barry Ferguson, changes direction of play well, long and sort balls, plus he is a towsy little git. The other one is getting an extended run in the team under McLeish , nearly Toon once!, Peter Lovenkrands confident, pace , good left foot , fine attitude, I rate him potentially better than Robert , and he is still young, pace is the thing now, Bellamy,Dyer,Jenas and ?,

Buff my posting on another thread would suggest we may have been separated at birth !!! ........

I watched the two Scottish League semis this week, talk about chalk and cheese. Rangers-Celtic was fantastic traditional British football at its best, committed, skillful, just great. Two players stood out. For Celtic it was the returning Agathe, a fantastic athlete and a superb player, this is what Hughes should be aiming to be. The other was Lovenkrands for Rangers, the lad who went there rather then joining us. He was so fast, and pretty skillful with it. Having seen him, and seen Gudjonsen who Robson missed out on last year, and taking into account Bellamy and Robert, it seems pretty obvious that Robson is motivated by pace in his players/targets. The second semi was Hibs - Ayr, which was 0-0 at full time, but wasn't as exciting as the scoreline suggests. Awful stuff betwen a striggling SPL side and an work hard 1st division side. Gary Caldwell played okay, played the bossy defensive leader a few times but didn't really stand out. He spent the second half of extra time as an extra centre forward and looked to be trying to perfect his own Bellamyesque whinge.

A lovely commentary moment .... Archie McPherson commenting that John 'Yogi' Hughes is one of those players who you can be certain alwats gives 189% effort, his 'expert' assitant replies, 'aye but he's a big ugly lad too'.
