BIN LADEN SENT 50 BOMBERS, SAY FEDS

By BRIAN BLOMQUIST

February 6, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - Osama bin Laden sent 50 terrorists on 20 suicide missions against the United States and Israel as recently as last summer, the feds charged yesterday in a 10-count indictment of American Taliban John Walker Lindh.

The indictment charges that Lindh learned about the existence of the suicide missions while he trained in a terror camp in Afghanistan and met bin Laden, but it doesn't claim he knew the details.

The indictment isn't specific about the newly revealed suicide missions ordered by bin Laden.

It says: "In or about June and July 2001, Lindh remained at the al-Farooq [terrorist] camp and participated fully in its training activities, after having been told early in his stay at the camp that bin Laden had sent forth some 50 people to carry out 20 suicide terrorist operations against the United States and Israel." The feds say the Sept. 11 attacks involved 20 people - the 19 hijackers and their alleged conspirator, Zacarias Moussaoui, who was busted on immigration charges and was in jail on the day of the attacks.

The feds wouldn't comment on other terror missions. The indictment says Lindh fought alongside al Qaeda after Sept. 11, "despite having been told that bin Laden ordered the attacks, that additional terrorist attacks were planned and that additional al Qaeda personnel were being sent from training camps to the front lines to protect bin Laden."

It also slaps Lindh with six new charges, including a firearms rap that will likely keep him in jail throughout his trial in federal court in Virginia. He was previously charged with four crimes, including conspiring to kill Americans.

Lindh's lawyers, meanwhile, filed papers asking that Lindh be released from jail pending trial and claimed he was denied a lawyer and threatened with "death and torture" while being transferred to Camp Rhino in Afghanistan by the U.S. military.

A bond hearing is set for this morning in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

Meanwhile, U.S. military officials said they plan to resume flying al Qaeda and Taliban detainees from Afghanistan to Camp X-Ray, the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after a two-week break to expand the facilities.

You know, you'd think this guy Walker would be concerned about the safety of his family while he was over there learning all of this.

That is, IF you believe all the stuff that they say he knew.
