Football agents - what is their role?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I ask this because I noticed in Saturday's Chronicle - a picture of Freddy on his 'business trip' to China alongside Paul Stretford, football agent to none other than Jermaine Jenas.

Why is Stretford on holiday with Freddy? Is he doing some business for the club? Or was he just having a free holiday?

It seems NUFC must have a close relationship with Mr Stretford and this must have helped with the JJ deal. Does Stretford have any other good players on his books that we can have?

Football agent's role is to secure the best deal for their client and look out for their interests.

And to take a healthy 10%...

I'm not sure about their role but I think it's a job for people who don't have sufficient integrity to be a used car salesman, estate agent, or tabloid journalist.

Still, the only way to do business with players is through these guys, so it's probably to the club's advantage to maintain a good relationship with Stretford.

Actually I am currently listening to Radio 5 and there is a discussion with 3 football agents, including Paul Stretford and Rachel someone. she is one of only a few female agents and while I would like to support her as a member of the 'sisterhood' she is coming across as a pain in the arsenal. Very sympathetic to the 'poor' players who they have to take care of. Talking about them as children FFS!
