That would take a long, unsatisfactory answer. To start he drew on his personal feelings and any connection other symbols in nature, tales etc that might express them in artful song. His introduction to poetry, classical and romantic of course made him realize his calling and choose among their themes and forms for a start. Personal tragedy and struggle made his coping artistically with life consistently grim, yet not without humor and a vital interest in life and ambitions for his career.
