Are you sure? I've heard of ATI cards that only recorded MPEG-1, but I've never heard of any that only recorded MPEG-2. I know of people who have your card and they all say it records MPEG-1. There is a setting under Digital VCR where you can set whether it records MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video. It is possible to use something to like TMPGenc to convert MPEG-2 to MPEG-1, but it will take a very long time and you will not like the results.

I am having a similar problem. I have the All In Wonder 7500, and I chose to record some video to mp2, and i need to get it to convert to avi. I can convert mpeg normally to avi via divx, but it gives me errors in virtual dub. Any help would be appreciated. Andrew

Adobe Premiere does not read ATI's Mp2 files. I cannot find a converter to change Mp2 to a Video file. Does any know of a solution?

I have the same problem, just bought the All In Wonder Radeon 8500DV and tried to access .mp2 files... read something about it on www.rage3d.com, but they didn't have a complete soloution... if anyone of you finds a soloution please email it to me. Thnx - Michael.

To transfer from mpeg 2 files (mp2) to anyother you need the Flask Mpeg program, you can find this site useful:

I am also new at video editing and I have spent much time experimenting with my ATI ALL IN WONDER 7500.

Of course choosing Mpeg1 solves the problem of making VCD's in conjunction with TMPGEnc and Nero CD burner. These programs are excellent for video editing.

I tried mpeg2(mp2) because I think it has a better picture quality. But it is a pain to work with because most video editing programs like VirtualDub and FlaskMPEG will only convert mpeg1.

So I have found a program called DVD2AVI which will change the mpeg2 (you have to open all files)to a fake avi file so that you can work with it in TmpgENC. http://www.vcdhelp.com/mpeg2tovcd.htm

You have to remember that you may have problems with audio synch it all depends upon your computer's resources. Hope this helps.

Actually the answer above works sometimes..... With my all in wonder connected to my VCR The resulting file *.mp2 will not convert using flashmpeg 100% of the time. It worked with an old video recording I had but with a new source of video content it was unable to recognize the mp2 file the wierd thing is that new video source worked if I only recorded around 10mins and wanted to convert that file to *.avi using flashmpeg but if I waited the 1:40min to capture all the data the resulting mp2 was not recognized. Strange hugh? So I say it works sometimes... Currently I'm attempting to use DVD2AVI to convert the renamed *.mp2 file to *.avi (divx 5 codec). The value of renaming mp2 file to avi is somewhat suspect but what the heck I'm willing to try anything before opting for the mpeg1 solution hehehehehe!

I HAVE THE ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just installed an ATI AIW 7500 and I was having the same problem. The Multimedia Center TV only seems to capture mpeg-2 in mp2 format, and that file type will not work with Adobe Premier. However, if you use the ULEAD program that comes with the AIW, you can capture in several different formats, some of which, can then be used to edit in Premier. Then again, I'm a newbie to VC (about 24 hours into it now)....so you may already know this, and I may be looking like an idiot.

-- Frank Franklin (am_fm_cassette@yahoo.com), May 05, 2002.

Go into command prompt from the Windows Start menu. Navigate to the directory of the file using the usual DOS commands (CD folder). Then rename the file from *.mp2 to *.mpg. Use something like REN *.mp2 *.mpg Then close command prompt. You should now be able to import the file into Adobe Premiere.

I must say, i tried both options, and the first one ( with the Flask Mpeg ) and not only does it take ages two and a half hours for a 34.14' file 480x576 SVCD, it screws up too. ( bad sync between the audio en video file ). so i opted to follow the 2nd hyperlink, the DVD2AVI one. In my case, I'd rather recommend this particular link, if you're seeking TO CUT FRAGMENTS for putting on a site later : http://www.vcdhelp.com/bbmpegedit.htm

Just download TMPGEnc and BBMPEG, and follow the instructions on the page. Using both programs as described here, took me less than 10 minutes to go through the entire ordeal !

-- Dirk (dirk@zapo.net), May 29, 2002.

here is a trick that will allow the mp2 file to play in dvd players that don't support svcd take the avseq.mpg file into tmpgenc and go to file mpeg tools simple multiplex load the file and select mpeg1 video cd *not system* from the drop down menu select an output and hit run. This will rewrite the header so your player will read it as a vcd without quality loss.

Note if you are burning with nero it's going to say this is not a valid video cd file or some such hit turn off standard compliance and continue and burn the vcd trust me it will work

I use FlaskMPEG 0.6 to convert .mp2 files, it doesn't seems able to process .vcr file though (I am still using codec divx4.12).

Make sure you have the correct iDCT settings, very important or you will get tons of encoding errors. De-select "auto select" and experimenting with every iDCT option, until find the fastest and the least errorous one, in my case I use AMD x87 iDCT.

"Select Output >>" ----> "OpenDML AVI output" ----> DivX Codec 4.12 (video codec) ----> IMA ADPCM (audio codec) Note 1: here you can double clicking the codecs, and customize them. (divx4.12 still has tons of advanced options for free, unless you have DivX5 Pro which cost a bit.)

Note 2: you will get errors if u select some audio codecs that involves a lot of compressions, guess it is still buggy.

If u use VCD profile (352x288) it seems pretty fast (i get 25+ fps always, I guess my fast harddisk performace helps a lot). You can tweak ur own profiles, and codec settings etc...

Mind you, you can edit the custom settings in MMC's Digital VCR such as video type(ATI vcr, mpeg1, mpeg2), audio format, max file size, bit rate, etc. in the "setup menu pop-up" by right-clicking... (Yeah, yeah, I know u knew, just in case...)

spec: ATI Multimedia Centre 7.6, athlon 1.4 ghz, AIW Radeon 32mb, 512mb pc133 sdram, 2*20gb raid-0 hdd + 120gb hdd storage.

P.S. ATI Multimedia Centre 7.7 was out on 13 June 2002, so guys go and check out the newer versions.

rename the .mp2 file to .mpg under dos to open it in premiere dosen't work. ;)

i tried the dvd2avi. that was about useless. but the app it said to use in the readme was TMPGEnc and that worked all by it self. just fyi, thought you guys might be intrested. thought id right it back up on the board, since thats how i found it in the first place. good luck and happy editing. btw, dont you that that is kinda screwed up that they use there own format, and then leave you hanging on the editing!!! just a thought.

I have been using my Radeon AIW for over a year now, and I love it for capping, but sometimes it converts back to .VCR format for no reason I can see, so I'm stuck with a file I really want but no way to edit it! I use tmpeg and flask, but neither seem to read .vcr files! I don't even need to edit it really, all I need to do is encode it to ANY OTHER FORMAT!!! Then I can edit w/ tmpeg or whatever, so does anyone know a program that will read/re-encode ATI's .VCR file format?

I know this forum hasn't been posted to in a while, but an reply would be HUGELY APPRECIATED!!

-- Fred Nash (frednash@hotmail.com), September 05, 2002.

I'd have to say, the best solution I've found (within 15 moniutes of trying) is to follow the link to DVD2AVI - by default, it spits out your ATI .MP2 cap into 2 files, a *.AVI coupled with the audio stream in .MPA format. The AVI pulls into Premiere just fine, but Premiere doesn't support MPA audio. To get past that, I grabbed a FANTASTIC app called "VideoMach" which allows you to manipulate the AVI from DVD2AVI into single or separate files and work with them as you choose in Premiere!

Check it out: http://www.gromada.com/VideoMach.html

Peace,

ZD

-- Ren Hoek (zendog42@hotmail.com), September 08, 2002.

Thanks for the input ZD, but I'm not talking about .MP2 files, I'm talking about ATI's proprietary .VCR file-format. I went ahead and tried out DVD2AVI but it wouldn't read the .VCR file... so I'm back to square one! Does anyone know anyplace that knows anything at all about .VCR files?? I can't find a forum or board anywhere, and ATI is no help at all.

-- Fred Nash (frednash@hotmail.com), September 10, 2002.

I have recently purchased the ATI all in wonder radion 8500dv. it comes with the MCC(multimedia center) software. In the software is the "library". Simply open this, this loads all the movie, music etc files into its library. right click on the .vcr file you want to convert and then click on 'convert to mp2. its that easy, it is just hard to find! I havent done this yet so I am unaware of the outcome. Actually I am tring to convert one now, but it is 11GB, so i am expecting it to crash. HOPE THIS HELPS!!

-- Rick (renright@yahoo.com), September 13, 2002.

Is there any reason why people are trying to capture Mpeg2's and then converting to AVI. This is a complete waste of time and video quality. Mpeg2 uses lots of compression, which in turn gets recompressed when you convert to MPEG1. It also means that you waste time and lose quality when you convert to AVI.

People should just capture straight to AVI using the Pic Video Motion Jpeg codec (or Huffyuv), and then edit in Premiere and export using whatever to make it an Mpeg1. If your having trouble capturing AVI in MMC (which works prefectly fine), then I suggest that you dowload Virtualdub (www.virtualdub.org) , and install the Windows VFWWMD wrapper. Then you can customize all of your AVI capture stuff way more than MMC.

I think I have found a solution to the problem of converting mp2 files to whatever file type you want...First open your mp2 file in DVD2AVI...Leave all the settings and Go to File > Save AVI...Choose a filename and click save...This brings up the compreesion dialog...Choose DivX 5.02 and then go to settings...The only thing to change there is the bitrate to 900kbps...This process creates an adio and a video file...Open TMPGEnc and open the video and audio files then choose the output file...Click settings and change the stream type to mpeg2 then go back and click start...I used a 2 minute mp2 file at 320X240 NTSC, 6 M Bit/s, 22.050 KHz 16 Bit Stereo and when complete I had an mpeg2 file 19.8MB that can be edited or played on everthing...I am using a P4 1.7GHz PC with 256 MB DDR Ram, and an AIW Radeon 8500 (Man I love the remote on this thing...To bad I can't type on it:) )...Anyways, hope this helps and if ya need more info drop me an e-mail and I'll be glad to help...Later

Speaking of the "Library" button on the ATI MMC LaunchPad, does anyone know of a fix for the "Failed to initialize" error that pops up in Windows XP? I'd like to use it to convert my .VCR files to MPEG2...

If there are others here with this same problem, perhaps we could start sharing configurations to see if we can determine if we are running something in common that may be preventing Library from running. Here's what I have...

Pentium 4 1.6GHz on AOpen AX-45 motherboard 512MB RAM WinXP Pro ATI A-I-W Radeon 32MB RAM Programs running on Startup... ZoneAlarm Pro MemTurbo II Microsoft Messenger SystemSuite BigFix RoboForm AutoTask 2000 AnalogX Proxy Wireless LAN USB utility for my SMC wireless network (PC to Laptop)

Perhaps those who *can* run Library in WinXP 11can share with us their configurations, so we may eliminate some things.

Thanks, Mark Worden mworden@altavista.net

ok, for all you guys trying to convert your *.vcr files to say like divx or something, the first thing you got to do is go to your file library in the ati programs. there when you select your *.vcr file, you have an option to convert it to *.mp2.

but here's the thing, i cant get my *.mp2 to convert at all. i tried everything like virtualdub, flask, tpmg(does work, but cant edit like virtualdub) and the Ulead program with it. oh, with the Ulead program that i have, everytime i try to import something, it say that the file is either copywrited or non supported. they are not copywrited since i captured it myself from like an old tape! what the heck!

im stuck, but id rather capture in *.mp2 since the quality is alot better than mpeg-1. and anytime you try to import a video into virtualdub, it says mpeg syncronization error or something. i think im stuck with the big file i guess, unless i wanna capture at a real crappy file size.

-- Joe McIntyre (neotetsuo82@hotmail.com), November 11, 2002.

This may be too simplistic for most techies who like to use several programs to convert files to AVI. Here is a proven solution. So long as you have a monitor with a good resolution you will get a good resolution .avi output. Here is your answer - capture your video (in any format) from your monitor. Go to http://www.atomixbuttons.com/vsc/ download the software. You can capture both video & audio perfectly sync'd. Settings are self explanatory. I hope that this helps. Mohammad.

-- Mohammad H. (mh@accentlink.com), November 13, 2002.

THIS IS THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM... LOOK NO FURTHER...

Use TMPGEnc to convert the .mp2 to a .mpg file. Go to :

File -> Mpeg Tools -> Merge & Cut -> Type: Mpeg-1 VCD-> Add (the the .mp2 file)-> Output (to wherever u want)-> Run

This is proven to work 100% of the time...

ENJOY!

I have an even simpler solution. Sonic Foundry's Vegas Video 3.0 will import the A-I-W native mp2 format without a hitch! From there you can render to any format you like. I believe you need to have the mpeg2 plugin though. Hope this helps!

-- teegee420 (rag420@hotmail.com), December 07, 2002.

Ok, after playing around with Vegas Video for a little while I concluded that it's just not for me. I can't stand the GUI. I then looked into using FlaskMPEG and sure enough it imports .mp2 just as easily. I encoded a 4gb .mp2 clip using the low motion MPEG4 codec which produced a great looking 384mb .avi that really impressed me. Rendering didn't take as long as I thought either. It was a 60 minute clip that only took about 80minutes(single pass). Great program, I must say.

-- teegee420 (rag420@hotmail.com), December 08, 2002.

I cannot get the library to work. I installed from the original cd which gave 7.6 , it worked. But, downloaded online , 7.7 , it not working. I think it is ATI software problem, sucked.!

Here's a tip for Flask MPEG users trying to import ATI .mp2 captured files.

First off, Flask doesn't seem to like large files that XP is capable of creating. But, it also doesn't like file parsing smaller chopped files unless you have installed the thunder add-on AND have also named them something appropriate. You can create a custom capture profile by editing one of the existing DVD capture profiles. I simply select the option for file sizes to not exceed 1GB. Then I rename the sequential files as if they were ripped from a DVD ripping program like smartripper. Example: file_1.vob, file_2.vob, and so on. Then you can start Flask and simply load the first file (e.g. file_1.vob) and the complete file set will also load.

The only problem I need to overcome is an audio sync problem I'm experiencing when I encode to divx 4.12. The audio sync appers to get worse as the length of the movie increases. Most likely a setting under flask mpeg? Any suggestions?

hi. i have a ati rage fury pro 128 vga. i didnt have problems with small captures (60 minutes). with 2 programs dvd2avi and vfapic converter. first run dvd2avi open your file and then select save project.it will creat a small file *dvd2av. After that open the vfapic load the this file and select convert.then you will have a small avi!! this file contains only information in order the editors can see your mp2 as a avi. so dont delete your original file. flaskmpeg is a usefull program too.

...BUT I HAVE ONE PROBLEM. I HAVE A MP2(ATI FILE) 3,2 GB.IT IS 2 HOURS MOVIE. WHEN I LOAD IT TO DVD2AVI OR FLASK MPEG IT THEY DONT LOAD IT ALL.ONLY ABOUT 60 MINUTES. HOW CAN I MAKE THEM TO OPOEN THE HALL MOVIE??? AND THE 2 HOURS OF MY MP2.

ANY HELP?

ANY HELP?

If you can't re-capture, I'd try splitting the file into smaller files using TMPEGenc. Then rename the sequential files as if they were ripped from a DVD ripping program like smartripper. Rename example: file_1.vob, file_2.vob, and so on. IMPORTANT: What you choose for "file_" must be consistant across the naming sequence, the extension must be .vob and you have to have the thunder plug-in for flask installed! I've done this sucessfully now on many ATI MP2 captures using Flask for DivX ;-) conversions with EXCELLENT RESULTS! I use "vts_1.vob, vts_2.vob, vts_3.vob, etc. and then start flask and load the first renamed file in the sequence (in the above case: vts_1.vob). If there is enough interest, I could put together a guide to capture/conversion using the ATI AIW 7500 Radeon?

MY SYSTEM: CPU: 1.2 GHz AMD 266 FSB RAM: 512 MB OS: Win XP Pro MY All In Wonder 7500 Radeon AGI Custom DVD Capture Settings: Video Capture Size = 720 x 480 Capture = I frames only Video Bitrate = 8 mb/sec Motion Comp: 100% Selections: Inverse 3:2 pull-down (AWESOME FEATURE) Select captured file sizes not to exceed 1 GB.

RE: MMC Library "failed to initialize" issue

I would recommend the following fix. I had this very specific issue and had just implemented this fix. ATI MMC Library loads as it should, the respective fix is described here http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?&threadid=33634110 It is quite incredulous that some imbecile at ATI tech failed to include this single file in the install script for both MMC 7.6 and 7.7 leaving this issue unaddressed all this long. FYI, currently ATI had still not officially posted this fix. Hope this helps. Martin.

if you want to contact me then remove "ATI" from my email.

RE: Library failed to initialize

Martin, Thank You!!!!

I had to take one more step after copying the Atioops.dll file to the MLibrary directory: I had to Start:Run regsvr32 "C:\ATI Multimedia\MLibrary\Atioops.dll"

Library works fine now.

Thanks again. I really, really, appreciate it.

Hi, I've tryed vidomi Player/Converter (www.vidomi.com) and it can convert an ATI mp2 file to a divx file. Once converted to a divx format, you can use VirtualDub to convert to any AVI file format. It seems complicated but it's the only way I found to make it works. ATI .mp2 --vidomi--> divX --VirtualDub--> AVI.

Hope it can help you.

Forget conversion programs and just rename file to mpeg or mpg.
