News today:

BBC Radio was stepping into a new era today as it launched its first digital station.

Five Live Sports Extra is the corporation's first new national station since its sister station Five Live launched in 1994, to replace Radio Five.

Action was kicking off at 2.30pm today with Premiership commentary from football correspondent Mike Ingham and the station's Jimmy Armfield.

The station is designed to operate on a part-time basis allowing the BBC to use its access to sporting events more fully. It will become the digital home of Test Match Special and will give extra Wimbledon, football and rugby coverage.

Any Posh person got a digital radio? Aren't they still very expensive?

Is it available on Satellite? I listen to Planet Rock (Ch 861 on Sky) that way.

Digital radios cost a minimum of about £500. I don't know anyone who has one, but somebody out there must have one otherwise they wouldn't bother with the new channels.

Channel 907 on Sky

I guess this will still be blacked out on the web? :-(

I saw a preview on the TV news this morning and they said that it will be available on the Internet too, as well as on satellite TV, which will be a big boost. But I wonder why they can put this on, if they can't put the normal Radio 5 match commentaries on the net? Maybe it won't be a real commentary, just a goals-and-news update programme.

Even a goals and news update would be better than the nothing we get now. Last season they did a great matchday program on the internet. Featured people in the studio giving updates from the tv pictures beamed back to their studios. Lots of interviews and analysis. Dunno why they aren't doing it this season.

The webcast is on and the commentator has just announced that Jermaine JACKSON is joining subject to a medical on Monday. Much merriment in the studio. So all this Jenas talk was a smokescreen so that Bobby could swipe the 70's family Motown star away from under the nose (remodelled) of brother Michael. Bobby's now on saying that Jermaine's birthday (the real one) is the same as his own, but he says not the same year, otherwise he wouldn't have bought him.

I just switched over to the new Radio Five Sports Extra webcast and it's broadcasting even though the web page says it should switch off between 14.30 and 17.00 (it's now about 14.35) They're doing interviews. They're giving away portable Digital Radios - they had 2000 entries. and they've got 5 to give out. Another 5 next week. Would it reach Brussels do you think from England? I can get Radio 5 tolerably well on good old fashioned 909 693 MW, but the quality is sometimes pretty bad.

It switched off at 15.00

Gary Speed is making his debut as a match summarizer at the Riverside this arvo. By the way, what a hard man he is - out with a broken toe and comes back early to steady the midfield. Hero.

Playing injured players is not something to praise.

The thing is softie, I believe that Speed will become the new Warren Barton (if he isn't already). He scored 14 goals, the other season, and the fans don't sing his name. He scored against the mackems and the fans don't sing his name.

It'll not be long before they will be wanting someone else in midfield instead.....
