Corn cracking machine.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I asked this question a few months ago and got some good reply's(thanks again),but I figured I would just wait for the old farm type to come along at an auction.I come across my gas leaf blower last week which also converts in to a leaf mulcher, after looking closer I noticed that the chopping blades are made out steel and somewhat heavy duty.so I gave it try and don't no why I did'nt sooner,it works great for my small scale operation(2 steers and a few chickens)I can crack enough corn to fill a 55 gallon drum in about 45min and that was going pretty slow as I did'nt want to push the machine. The blower has had little use since moving to the boonies and I figure if it last a few years at cracking corn it will be well worth it,since I was getting tired of watching whole kernels go in one end and come out the other end of the steers unscaved(no spell check here)I think I will keep my eye out at rummage and auction sales for a back up unit.Just thought I would pass this on for others to consider. Thanks everbody.Dave

Dave:

If your chickens have access to your steer pasture, you might not want to stop feeding all whole kernel corn. A little bit in the manure will encourage the chickens to spread patties out by scratching for the corn.

Thanks Ken,My chickens didn't seem to be doing a good job picking thruogh the pile this past summer unless there feeder was empty for a day or two, maybe I should hold there feed down and make em work for it.It just seems like I am seeing to much come through undigested and I believe there will still be a few pieces left over since the cracking misses a few kernels here and there.Dave
