Jenas agrees terms Jenas has agreed personal terms with Newcastle

Newcastle United tonight agreed personal terms with Jermaine Jenas as his 5m transfer moved a step closer.

Click here now for great Premiership bets The results of the 18-year-old midfielder's medical will be known on Monday and he is expected to be unveiled at a press conference later the same day.

"Newcastle United confirmed this afternoon that they have agreed terms with Nottingham Forest for the transfer of 18-year-old midfielder Jermaine Jenas to Newcastle United,'' said a club spokesman.

"Personal terms have also been agreed with the player and the transfer is now subject to the player passing a medical, the results of which will be known on Monday morning.

"Newcastle United then plan to hold a press conference at St James' Park on Monday afternoon, details of which will be advised on Monday morning.''

England Under-19 captain Jenas spent the day on Tyneside after United agreed the fee with Nottingham Forest.

His arrival is timely for the Magpies, who are facing up to the prospect of having to do without star man Kieron Dyer after a stress fracture of the foot ruled him out for up to eight weeks.

Tipped for the top

England Under-21 boss David Platt, who handed Jenas his senior debut as a 17-year-old during his spell as Forest manager, was happy to sing the youngster's praises.

"If he ends up going to Newcastle, they will have a very good player on their hands,'' he said.

"Even they may be surprised at how good a player he is.

"He's athletic, quick, is a good reader of the game, can score a goal and can pass long and short. There aren't too many weaknesses in his game.

"Jermaine has the right mental approach to the game. He takes things in his stride, and I would expect him to do the same at Newcastle - if that is where he ends up.''

Ace Player - we hope. Same age as Chopra and Offiong? We're going to have the youngest team in the league soon. Or already?

"....it's just another brick in the wall" (Pink Floyd).

Got to say I'm excited by this signing.

as Clarky pointed out on the other Jenas thread

'he will not have come to rot in the reserves for the next twelve months'

and at 5 million quid nor should he

Jenas maintained through all the speculation that he wanted to play football in the first team.

All being well I expect him to be in the squad for Southampton and some minutes on the field at SJP

Just what we need in my opinion.

We have young lads up front and young defenders - but real quality midfielders seem lacking - not just with us but generally around the country.

Here's a team to play the last 20 minutes when we're 3 up at the Stadium of Light in a few weeks time (bring on Chopra, Jenas and Lua Lua for Shearer, Robert and Solano) and let them have a go : Given 25, Griffin 22, O'Brien 22, Distin 24, Hughes 22, Jenas 18, Dyer 23, Lua Lua 21, Bernard 22, Bellamy 22 and Chopra 18. Average age 22, and a believable team. That team could see us through the next ten years.

Look out O'Dreary, Robson's 'babies' are in town! :-D

The thing that concerns me is that we are putting an awful amount of pressure on the lad to perform straight away. I think we should ease him into the picture, 20 minutes here, 30 minutes there. Who is he going to replace?? Will it be Dyer and him in the middle (when he comes back) or what?? I think we can safley say that Rob lee has played his last toon game, shame that really, another era comes to an end. Still if we are playing a bunch of kids as mentioned before, imagine what their gonna be like when they are at their peak?? Scary the heights we could attain.

The future really is quite exciting, and I can't wait to see how Jenas will turn out (long term I mean, not against Southampton)
