Mainly when it succeeds it what Poe set out to do and is timeless for having the indefinite emotional effect rather than a moral theme or overly descriptive story line. Unqueness and an interesting set of contradictions set him apart as well. His simple brief techniques are also quite ingenious and musical, his obscurities tantalizing but not alienating as in much of modern poetry. The interrelationships of his word sounds are little analysed but key to creating the "beautiful line".
