retrieving video from vcd?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

hope someone can help! i have been able to make vcd's from old home movies. however, the original video tapes belong to relatives and i no longer have them in my possession. how can i take the video on the vcd and transfer it to video tape, without simply doing a straight rca (audio, video) cable link from a dvd to a vcr. i'd like to maintain some of the quality i have with the vcd that would obviously be lost with the aforementioned technique. thanks.

A roundabout way would be to install VirtualDub and Premiere, then a FireWire card with all the appropriate drivers and the requisite DV AVI codec. You open the MPEG (avseqxx.dat) files in VirtualDub, set the range (note the filesize limitations) and output to DV AVI. Recompose these DV AVI chunks in Premiere, then export to DV or D8 tape. Note that there are no analogue in-betweens in the process which can degrade the already low MPEG-1 quality.
