Poe really lead a pitiful life. He suffered from alcoholism and a gambling addiction. Most of his existance was in poverty. His writings were a blend of his own sorry and a desire for greater, unattainable aspects. He had a brilliant mind but lacked the initiative and ambition to apply it to all aspects of his life. I respect him for his controbutions to literature, but pity him for everything else.

As for Poe suffering from alcoholism I would bet this is not as much the case as his dope habit. A good friend of mine was in charge of the archeological dig behind his house here in Baltimore City when they excavated his privy aka outhouse (which was a common place to dispose of empty bottles along with other household trash during the 19th centaury before public trash collection started) they did not find a single alcohol bottle but nearly a hundred small opium type vials were found these were of the type that would have been in use during Poe’s residence.

I also think edgar was drunk when he wrote is best music. (not trying to be funny.) Also edgar had a gambling problem thats why he went into debt. So if he had a gambling problem he might of also had a drinking.Also he was one of the mostunhappiest poets
