Spring cleanin on the farm in the 50's. [preachin]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Every spring on the farm it meant cleanin up from the winters fury. Downed limbs and other stuff that we just "let go" durin those cold months were all piled into brushpiles and burned--along with any paper, cardboard etc. Ole jeep and I would cut a couple sassafrass limbs or twigs and use'm for to cook meat on. We'd also take big taters, coat'm in clay or mud, roll'm into the coals of the fire and cook'm. Sometimes we'd also make coffee the "cowboy way"--grounds mixed in with the water-. After a mornin of hard work it was always good to have dinner time[noon for ya'll citydudes] to roll around.

Usually the meat we used was hog meat-home grow'd, home butchered, home cured. Mom would chunk off purty good chunks for us to cook. Sometimes we'd lay the meat in a dutch oven with a lid and shove it into the coals alongside the taters. Other times we'd cook'm on those little twigs and still other times we'd roll'm in tinfoil and lay'm in the coals. Any way we'd cook'm it was always fit to eat. We also cooked rabbit, chicken or beef that way too.

Spring is just around the corner here in S.E. IL--or at least I hope so! Still time to "roll the cob" with some old dudes a mite. I never fail to learn something when loafin a little with these old duffers. Oh, BTW-"rollin the cob" is "loafin" just incase ya'll don't understand the hillbilly way of talkin.

I've had enough winter to last until next year. Hasn't been cold enough yet to kill all the nasty bugs I rekon, but it never does kill'm anyhow--even when it gets to way below zero for a week. Time to start workin on a "skeeter killer" and hopefully it'll be ready when those big B52 Bombers from the river bottoms make their appearance at the "House of old hoot, Lil Dumplin and Calvin, the cat".

Healing from Almighty God is progressing quite nicely. Glory to God for His love of old hillbillys like me!! He'll do the same for anybody that believes in His Word! Isaiah 53:5, I Peter 2:24 are just a couple of verses. His will? Check out 3 John 2! Many can doubt His healing abilities if they want to. I don't--I've experienced it! He's still in the saving business too. No charge for the offer of eternity with Him! old hoot. Matt.24:44
